Going full "redneck" this weekend and heading to Talladega for the race. Looks like we'll being passing through B'ham around lunch. Anyone have any recommendations for a upper-end casual restaurant?

Pappadeax on 280 at 459 is decent seafood.

a little off 459 is a burger joint i frequent called Twisted Root - has a decent menu and a different game meat everyday if you want that.

if you get off 459 onto 280 and go about a mile south there is a Carrabbas, Logans Roadhouse and a little past is a Mexican restaurant called Superior Grill (on the left across from a chevron)

For local fair with what you are requesting, I would recommend Mudtown

Really good grub. Fried Green tomato sandwich, Jamaican smokehouse press is good. They have excellent shrimp and grits as well.

If you're passing through early enough and you feel like brunch, Big Bad Breakfast on hwy 280 is great. Might be my favorite restaurant in town right now.

Some great food on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. They give discounts if you fly confederate flags on your truck as well.

Mudtown looks like it would work. If you cant find something on that menu, you don't like food.

Melt (variations of grilled cheese sandwiches) is good, Post office pies (pizza place -
never eaten there but heard it is good), any one of the Saw's BBQ locations are great. It's hard to go wrong with Birmingham restaurants.

Jim 'N Nicks Hopefully, regardless of where you dine, you'll take I-459 from 20/59 around town to I-20 East. Off I-459 take Exit 13 (US 31 Hoover) and Jim and Nicks is on the right about a mile south of the exit. Of course you'll go right past The Galleria which has several eateries out front.

Since you will be coming in on 59/20 and leaving out the same way, something close to the interstate would seem appropriate. Niki's West is right off of Finley Blvd and not a big detour. It's an iconic meat and three. If you go, make sure you are hungry.

I love Mudtown and live real close to there. I guess if you are taking 459 around the southside of town it'd make sense to go there. If you'd prefer BBQ, I'd recommend Ms Myra's which is in the same neighborhood. Get the chicken and the white sauce plus whatever dessert she has. If you like Mediterranean food, try the Olive Branch. It's just down the street from Ms Myra's. Get the falafels and the mint sweet tea.
