Firefly.
For the win. Best Sci-Fi show ever, in my opinion. Trouble is I'm one of the reasons it went tits up - I never watched it or even heard of it while it was airing. I got the Blu-Rays, though, plus Serenity, and they're a go-to on late sleepless nights. Excellent television.
Deadwood. It lasted 36 shows, so it's hard to compare to the above. But I hated to see it go. Ian McShane as Al Swearengen was the perfect kinda sorta bad guy.

HBO got in wayyyy in over their head building the sets for Rome... There was talk of movie for a while but that flamed out.
Couldn't have been anymore elaborate than GoT.

They were by quite a bit. Both the BBC and HBO budgeted the show and couldn't float it. Add to it a fire that wiped out part of the 6 sets in Italy and it couldn't recover.

Wish I had seen that then .. can't imagine any TV show sets more elaborate than GoT. Thought I had read somewhere that they are the most expensive of all time?

At this point probably so. Rome only ran two seasons compared to twice that at this point with GoT. In just the first season BBC committed around $110 million with HBO committing $85 million to Rome.

Has anybody said " Gilligan's Island"?
One more season, and I am pretty sure Mary Anne and Ginger would have gotten knocked up... well unless the Professor found a way to make Birth control pills out of coconut and mango.

How do you think they stayed un-knocked up the whole time?

If they ever cancel Sherlock, it will be too early.

1. Firefly
2. AD
3. Happy Endings (such a great show, we just bought all three seasons and have been blowing through episodes.)
4. Better off Ted

MASH was based on a 3 year long war and it ran for 12 years.
The physical aging of the actors alone meant it couldn't last forever.

Good gosh ... the set designers and builders made some money. That had to be good for the economy.
You motivated me to do some reading ... found a pretty good article from some years back talking about production costs, rain delays, etc. But most interesting are the mentions of Six Feet Under, the new series that was in the works TruBlood, the series that was ending early Deadwood, and of course Rome. Fairly interesting short read. LINK LINK I was looking at some of the pics of the sets, just incredible. LINK I guess I missed it because I was actually living in Rome from 2004-2008 and only came home for special occasions and/or ballgames ... ironic in a way. I never once remember hearing a word breathed about this series while I was over there.

Pushing Daisies
Very, very underrated show. It was fantastic.
Firefly was good, but it was really just a western set in space. Not really surprised it didn't last - particularly when Fox bounced it all around the schedule.
The 'closeout' movie Serenity was excellent.

1600 Penn was really funny, NBC cancelled it after less than 10 episodes. Anytime Bill Pullman is the president, I'm on board.
