Why isn't Mizzou competitive in any sport?

And by competitive, I don't mean having a winning season or making the postseason. I mean legitimately competing for a conference championship. Mizzou has 2 conference championships since joining the SEC: 2013 and 2016 Volleyball. (I'm excluding wrestling as they compete in the MAC and we have a huge advantage there).

We have 18 varsity teams, yet none of them really ever contend for championships. This isn't new to the SEC either...we were the same way in the Big 12. I understand it in football, and even basketball to a certain extent, but you would think we'd occasionally finish at the top in some of the other sports.

I will say, this is something I thought Sterk would improve for us. He was great at SDSU and was national AD of the year when we hired him. But competitive results are still lacking...

You expected the AD to change a lifetime of middling performance in 3 years?

I guess it's still early in Sterk's tenure to expect him to create a change from the status quo, but my original point stands as far as our time in the Big 12 and SEC under previous AD's. I'm a younger fan, but my understanding is that we were fairly competitive in the Big 8.

Alden's best BBall hire was a guy that couldn't wait to get to Arkansas. Pinkel was his defining hire.

Mack Rhodes was a shite bag.

Sterk may not be around much longer either if he keeps stepping on Dollar Bill's toes.

I think Alden was so compliance-driven that every basketball coach felt their job was impossible. He certainly didn’t have anyone who wanted to work with him that was a worthwhile coach.

Maybe so, but Missouri doesn't have the donor pool to turn his money down. You unless you can write checks that match his, this is how it's going to be.

Well, it was pretty obvious that no one wanted to work for him when Frankie was the only guy willing to inherit Pressey, Denmon, English, Bowers, and Ratliffe.

I thought Sterk was killing it (for Mizzou) on donations?

This would tend to suggest the problem is likely not Sterk.
I've been around Mizzou long enough to know it's not. I'm surprised we haven't run him off yet, but rumors are it's coming. I think we get rid of him before we get rid of Odom. Mizzou gonna Mizzou

that would be sad. I think he has taken some poor steps while here at Mizzou but I would like to see what he could do with a football hire.

He has done OK with the basketball and softball hires.

The list of people that have written $20+ million checks to the AD is short. Nancy and Bill are on it. If more people donated, it wouldn't be an issue, but individual donations lag far behind the rest of the conference. Given the current debt and potential buyout situation, I don't think Sterk can afford to not play ball with the big check writers.

That was the WTF hire that had a chain reaction. Got us in trouble and hired a crap coach with tons of talent and a good thing going.

I think you missed the part where he excluded wrestling because it's not an SEC sport and defined winning as more than winning and competing for conference championships.

And baseball? Really? They had one good stretch when Scherzer and Crow were here. Been about it when you're talking about truly competitive teams. And as you indicate, softball hasn't been competitive since firing a successful coach.

So the 1 sport that’s a top 10-15 national program we exclude? Sounds like a bad thesis.

The 1 sport that Mizzou should be good at is soccer. There’s way too much talent in KC and STL to not have a nationally relevant program.

and hockey. Rumor has it that Illinois may be upgrading their program to D1 soon. Could you imagine an annual series at Enterprise or the United Center ?

No way Mizzou adds hockey. Adding programs costs money that Mizzou doesn’t have. And be of Title IX you can’t just add a men’s program. A women’s program of some sort also has to be added. There’s also not an ice rink in Columbia

I could see Mizzou playing hockey alternating between KC and StL. It would be difficult but not impossible. They would have to drop a mens sport tho to keep the numbers equal.

Money, mostly. Lax fan support too. Middling recruiting base.

Who really cares about anything other than football and basketball though? At some point we will win in basketball. Football? That’s one tall order
