I don’t buy that. Werner took a QB coach job at about a third the salary.

I still think the offense will be good next season. 10 starters return, and the Tennessee offenses under DD did a lot of the same things that Mizzou did well this season.

BO and DD’s success will come down to how they either recruit or develop a QB to replace Lock in 2019.

I read the tweet. That's never been reported anywhere. Never once has Lock stated anything about a preference for the hire, and sure as hell did not volunteer to completely change the entire scheme right before his final year.

Right. Could of had Fisch or Werner for sure.

Probably could have got Canada as well.

As horrific of a choice as this was, it was a choice.

I'll give BO credit for not giving a shite what anyone thinks, but I think he made a fatal flaw.

I do not think the scheme completely changes. Mizzou has recruited to a scheme. DD will make some changes to the offense, but his offenses haven’t been that much different from what Mizzou has run the last 2 years.

You asked and I obliged with a tweet reported by Gabe who reported that Lock said that he would like to have an oc with a pro-style offense and who has also worked in the NFL.

Like I said, I read the tweet. Lock never said that.

Gabe is in full spin mode.

It's wildly different than the RPO based tempo offense we ran under Heupel.

Dooley has been a pro style offense guy his entire career. Between the tackle running, play action and down the field shots.

A pro style offense would be a terrible idea for our program, but hiring a guy with no experience to employ an offense he has no experience in would be an even worse one

Mizzou doesn't have the skill set and size on offense to run the pro-style plus it takes a couple of years before players would be able to convert from the more familiar gimmick spread.

Suprised by the melt. Dooley was a bad head coach. Lots of good OC are bad head coaches.

Willing to give Dooley a chance, and think he'll do better than the average dumbshit fan thinks.

He should have.

This was the kind of hire I expected Odom (as a DC) to make initially - pro style, close to the vest. The exact kind that would get your brains beat if you tried to out-athlete SEC opponents.

Here's a long shot... But I wonder if this was done to try to keep Lock - to make him more pro-ready?

EDIT... Ah, I see this was already discussed. Whether Lock said it publically or not it's one of the few theories that would make sense, assuming Odom's analytic approach to everything.

I actually like the pro style offense. I think it allows us to put our best personnel on the field for this season (2 TEs especially)

I don’t like the halfassed hire. everything Dooley touches goes to shite. How do people not see that?

Spread offenses aren’t gimmicks anymore lol. When 90% of CFB runs the same offense, that’s when it stops becoming a gimmick. I remember reading a quote from Chris Peterson going into their game vs. Stanford where he said that he had to introduce his team to what a fullback was because they’ve never heard of it before.

And the plays aren’t different. You’ll still see Power/Counter, IZ, and some Iso like we saw this year. IMO you’re trying to “out-athlete” people when you attack with the same offense 90% of other teams run and rely on your receivers trying to win 1v1 matchups all the time.

Pro-style offenses get a bad wrap because of the stigma from the 90’s where the QB turns around, hands the ball off, and watches the play 30 times a game. That’s not what I anticipate. I still expect a healthy dose of RPO, and getting Rountree/Crockett on downhill runs like they’ve always been.

Yea that’s pretty much a description of what Mizzou did offensively this year.

I've never seen the transition go smoothly from an air-raid system to a pro-style system unless the team is either that talented and versatile or the coach is that good. Mizzou is neither. Furthermore, we are in the SEC, which makes it that more difficult. I hate this hire the more and more I dig into it.

I mean, it's similar in the respect that both offenses sometimes run and sometimes throw.

It’s similar in that what DD likes his offenses to do are the same as what Mizzou did well last season.
The key will be blending the pro and spread concepts together.
Use the middle of the field
Introduce some intermediate passing concepts.
Spread offenses have way more simplistic route trees. So adding mor ways to attack defenses will help. Doing so should really help both Lock and Hall’s draft status.

I’m not saying I like the hire, but probably goes something like the Henson hire. Which was a very good offense when Mizzou had talent. Mizzou returns 10 starters, so the offense should be good next season.
I DD can recruit and/or develop a replacement for Lock after next season it will work. I think we get 2 years minimum of BO and DD.

Here comes the wuwu oversell

"I think we get 2 years minimum of BO and DD"

Yep top 10 defense... Insert BO's grand scheme the rest is history

Heup/El Top 15 offense... Insert BO's grand vision.

Most are laughing at the hire...

You have your work cut out for you.

I haven’t said I like the hire. It’s a major risk.

According to a couple of the Tennessee beat writers the offense Tennessee ran with him averaged over 30 ppg in 2 of his 3 seasons there. The 1 season it didn’t was due to his QB being injured. They also have reported that the Tennessee offense was his offense.

Either way he will have to be a terrible OC to ruin the offense in year 1. I will give him a chance.
