Over management.. Trying to fix what isn't broken. Tons of Ego......Starting to sound like BO's twin.

Dooley has never been a coordinator. He’s never called plays, unless he did it in secret. He’s never specialized in coaching quarterbacks. And he hasn’t recruited since 2012.

Wait all these threads before this one have said the the HC gets both the blame and credit for his teams.
Maybe DD ends up being a good OC. If not I think it’s closer to what we saw with Henson. That 2013 offense was very good, because there was talent and experience there. You can also say that about 2018.
It will probably be 2019 or 2020 that we find out if DD can do the job. Same thing happened with Henson.

I think our biggest adjustment in a Pro style offense is the Oline. They will now need to learn to drive block instead of occupy space and dance. There will also be more pulling guards and tackles on run plays. I don’t think we’ve had linemen able to do this for years. Castillo came from a run based offense in HS. He probably remembers how to drive block and get push on the LOS. Pro style is all about whipping the other guy on the line, and getting the push. 3 yards and a cloud of dust between the tackles. If we can get or teach out personnel, it’s a winning style of offense to play. But whipping Georgia and Bama in the trenches will certainly test our ability.
So, pro style offense establishes the run first, then play action pass. Sometimes go over the top to keep the defense honest. But if we can’t run the ball, and teams load the box, the flexibility isn’t there to adjust like RPO.

Good point. I’ve forgotten where he was OC before. Do you know?

Arkansas couldn't wait to run Chaney out of town after two seasons when they scored 16 and 20 PPG during conference play during the 2013-14 seasons. He now looks like a savant again while coaching the most talented two deep he has ever had.

Navy that’s a better look at my point. DD will have a talented offense next season. I think he will be successful his first season.
Now in his second season when he will have to replace Lock, Hall, 2 NFL TE’s and 2 starters on the OL. That will be when we find out if DD can do the job.

You may be right. But why did Odom pick Dooley? Anyone want to take a shot at that? Like a real answer? Not “he thought he’d be the best guy for the job.”

That’s a Tennessee insider take. The hire doesn’t make sense to me, but I will give DD a chance. I also think there’s enough offensive talent here now for him to have a good first season.

I can interview well and make a good power point. And I’m really not being flip here. What was the thought process that led Odom to say “Let’s bring in Derek Dooley?”
Did it include: I don’t want someone who can be interim if we start 1-4 next year.
Did it include: 8 people I’ve wanted have not had sufficient interest in working here.

The hire hedges on DD's exposure to what Garrett has done with the RPO/power run game and Prescott the last two years.
Having another WR coach developing QBs is the biggest question I have with the hire.

I will take your word for that.
Any reason we are paying him more than Heupel made?

Eh. He didn’t get Odom a raise.

Sexton sort of did. Part of BO’s bonus structure is tied to attendance. If attendance is in the same neighborhood as the last couple of years BO will make an extra 500-600k next season.
Heupel has the same type of thing in his contract at UCF.

Koetter getting another year at Tampa tubed BO's top target IMO. Almost identical offensive concepts and QB development experience. Monken wouldn't have been in Columbia long but I would have liked to have seen him get the job.

Few thoughts.
DD has been a head coach and can run the offense with little to no supervision. This allows Barry to focus on the defense 100%.
What's wrong with a pro offense? You need 3 things really. Big physical backs, QB with pocket presence and an arm, and a big physical offensive line. Mizzou possesses all 3 of these. Add in the fact we have an NFL Tight End and I don't see the issue.
Weren't some of you crying about up tempo and not controlling the ball?
Last, the guy was given a HC job in the SEC and was an assistant in the NFL, he obviously brings something to the table.

Conceptually, I like what direction BO is trying to push the offense in. Crockett and Rountree making cuts behind power and counter blocking is ideal and creates a lot of conflict for the SS/SLB.
DD has never been a QB coach. Andy Hill is a great WR coach. QB coach? Pinkel's decision to not allow Henson to hire a QB coach cost the entire staff their jobs. Mauk was a train wreck his entire career mechanically and Lock was fundamentally flawed until JH got to Columbia.
For that reason alone, I don't like the hire.

My thought is Barry couldn't find a QB coach he liked, if Lock comes back ideally there's not a lot you need for a QB coach to be super involved this year. I'd think he hires a QB coach next year and has DD just be the OC in 2019.
That's just an educated guess.

Nor has he called a play
He hasn't recruited since 2012
He went 4-19 in the SEC
He is 0-15 against top 20 teams.
Had one winning season (LaTech 2008)
He was just fired from Dallas
Unimpressive at best.
Let's see what he does next year.
