I just don't like arbitrary, bullshite rules. Either all tragedy is too tragic to be made fun of (which would suck, and be boring IMO), or no tragedy is too tragic to be made fun of (preferred, but probably unrealistic...).
quote:Each offense written down? No, I don't think so. Most people just have the common sense/decency to not joke about them. Others learn by seeing someone getting banned for committing such a offense. The list is pretty short I think (Katrina, UA Tornado, AU shootings, aTm bonfire...I'm sure there are a couple others)
Honestly, I was just looking for an explanation, not a discussion on the morals of SECrant. But there didn't seem to be anything about this on the Guidelines/FAQ. Are these rules written somewhere, or do we just stumble upon them by accident?

You're being a bitch about wanting all these "explanantions."
The rules are arbitrary here, just like anywhere else, tbh. DWI. Don't like it? Go make your Bonfire jokes on another board, idgaf.

After going 0-11, a lot of Carolina fans lost the ability to feel feelings.

Have you never seen O Brother either?

Ghostbusters reference?
What if Rick Moranis has become a Bulldog fan?

What is the bonfire reference? Is it something only old schoolers know about? Honest question.

I get that tasteless jokes aren't everyone's cup of tea, but, IMO, if you can't laugh in the face of tragedy you'll spend all your time crying. But that's just me, I guess.
No, it's not just you. I have a dark sense of humor and I tell plenty of tasteless jokes...........but not here. A website is hardly the place.

I don't have a problem if it's a set rule, but TT9 is banned for just referencing a bonfire, which was a tradition before the construction mishap and doesn't necessarily have to do with the "tragedy".
This is what I'm asking, though... So, if there is commentary about a home LSU (or I guess any gulf or Atlantic coast team, really...) game the weather cannot be mentioned at all for fear of it being associated with a hurricane?
The second poster should be banned as he linked it to the "tragedy", but just mentioning bonfires? That makes you guys seem like whiny counts who are way too defensive.

I have, actually. And Barton Fink, The Hudsucker Proxy, Miller's Crossing, Burn After Reading, Fargo and various others. This one just got by me at the time, and has become a hip quotable movie among many, which turned me off as time went by.

Your obtuse shite is getting way old. It's pretty simple. Reference the bonfire incident in a derogatory manner or in a way that is intended to make fun of it, get banned. If you have any more questions, there's an email address for those.

I'm lambasted by a fan-base that is being defensive about something that happened almost fourteen years ago, and I'm being the bitch? Really?!?
Then you should join those they have taken breaks. Doesn't matter if it was 50 years ago, it's a line that shouldn't be crossed.

Once again... not making fun of fire tragedies of any kind. I'm making fun of idiotic stances set on a public form and the gestapo policing of those stances. Slight difference.

While you appear to be trolling I will give an answer you may ignore but at least gets to the point. I have friends and family that were involved in the major disasters listed above and I can tell you even the ones that physically lived through it still carry it with them and may do so until they pass away. The issue with the internet is you may never really know who is on the other side. Therefore, it is best to aim for the safe side before opening a can of unexpected consequences and old wounds.
I grew up around cops and know many who have seen terrible things like car accidents and murder that are so grizzly they make light of it to get through it. This is not to say what they say should be said but they never say it in earshot of the general public. Think of similar postings on the Rant where posters and lurkers should be treated the same way. Horrific things are not suitable for the general public and it is not an idiotic stance to ban folks that cross the line. Comparing mods on the Rant to a Nazi group would be insensitive to anybody reading the Rant with a tattoo from Auschwitz.
If you are not trolling and really do not understand the difference then a ban probably awaits you in the future.

But, according to the Policia in this thread Nazi jokes would be permissible as it didn't occur in the Southeast within a reasonable time frame. Holocaust or Antisemitic Nazi jokes would be verboten do to the racism bylaws, I would imagine, but comparing someone to, or making light of, the Nazis would be acceptable (hence all the "Germans" hoopla). 9/11, which was a demonstrably larger tragedy than the Bonfire is even given a pass because it happened over yonder, to those people, not here at home.
That's where I have an issue. If these tragedies that occur to us and ours are off limits due to the possibility of hurting someones feelings yet other tragedies that happen elsewhere are fair game, then it strikes of a callous hypocrisy which is substantially more morally corrupt than a cathartic laugh at the fleetingness of life. You and your pain are not intrinsically more heartfelt than anyone else's pain. But one is punchline material and the other is a bannable offense?
