That’s one thing me and you will always agree on.

Oline and Dline will always be where the game is won at.

When both teams oline and dline are equal units however, the factor that determines the game will be the QB. The great equalizer/x-factor will always be the QB when both teams have good line play.

I think Franks’ play over the end of the season kind of cemented the starting roll.

It all depends on consistency, and while he had a few games to close out the season there were some very telling problems that couldn't be swept under the rug.

Did he have much of a choice? He benched him in the Missouri game. I don't think Franks would have remained starter if Trask stepped in, and I honestly think the fan base was pretty much done.

I think Franks was lucky to remain starter all year this year, and a healthy Trask would have battled for it. Will that happen next year? I have no idea, probably not. I don't think Franks should feel like the job is his quite yet because there are definitely some good QBs in that stable.

Imo if Emory is up on the playbook, Franks will have a shorter leash if he is the day 1 starter.
Franks knowing the playbook/checks ect better was the reason he didnt get pulled a few games this past season.

This thread deserves a sticky. I would do it if I was an admin. I don’t even know who our admin is.

Franks' experience really helped him, and obviously the team supported him. However, a lot of the "old guard" is being exchanged for the newer guys. By 2020 McElwain's players will almost all have been washed out because his sophomores aren't even on par with Mullen freshmen.

That being said: Emory looked much better by the end of the season, and as long as he keeps his nose clean he should see a lot more field this time around.

One thing I look at is the vast improvement from 2017 to 2018 for Franks...even with his hiccups we went 10-3 and the whole team usually has some blame sandwiches to share when we lose a game.

Will Franks make even better strides in 2019? I really think so with experience and a great staff of Johnson and Mullen. Franks put in the hard work last offseason and if he does it again...then he should avoid benching. None of us know right now. Im sure Franks knows he needs a lot of work and Mullen never praised him this past year because he wanted to keep Franks hungry and to stay grounded.

Emory has talent and its easy to see he will get snaps and no reason not to think that he can benefit Franks by resting him in spurts and get enough snaps to make Emory happy. He would be a junior after Franks leaves. None of know when the ugly injury bug hits and you want backup.

That was one of my guesses. I think we lose another backer for sure, so need the younguns to be ready from the word Go.

I just feel this team is all dependent on QB. Jones needs to play. You can’t beat Bama or Clemson with an average QB. Jones may bust, but we need to take that chance. I’d rather take the risk with the upside being a playoff spot and the downside being having to resort back to Franks and not having a future Qb yet.

Take the risk. Play Jones. See if he is what we hoped when we recruited him. Franks will improve, but he will never be good enough to win it all. Considering we are UF, that should be our goal. So give the keys to the man who can win the race.

I agree.

Trask or Franks were both just there so one of the Jones' could take over. I always liked Trask's chances because he's just a much calmer presence, but I think we need to come to grips that right now -- we need experience at QB.

Jones needs every snap because 2019 is still a big year, but 2020 is the year we need him for. Almost all of McElwain's poorly managed roster washed out, almost all Mullen's players.

Dameon Pierce as a Junior, Malik Davis is a senior. Copeland is a Junior. Hopefully we see the reins turned over to Emory (eventually) and Franks transfers somewhere to improve his stock.

I assumed Copeland took a redshirt. Either way he will be nasty. He has such a great first step and can get to full speed fast. Can't wait to see him on the field with Jefferson and Grimes regularly. Will be one of the best cores in the nation hands down. Then add in our three headed monster at RB in Davis, Pern, and Pierce..I'm very excited about this group. Jones with that much skill around him could be a very scary offense

I guess we will hear from you all spring that someone is taking the QB spot from Franks and that he will transfer. I will believe it when I see it, hasn't happened yet and Franks was greatly improved last year. Unless someone really steps up or Franks regresses, he will be the starter again in 2019. I know you don't want to hear that but that's the way it is.
