Another interesting nugget from Pappoe was that he said the defense they’re practicing is similar to what Steele was doing. And honestly, that’s kinda comforting considering that was working well for us.

I thought the same thing. I was a little concerned when there was all this talk of going to a 3-4 at the beginning. But it sounds like that will have it’s place but we are going to have plenty of 4 down packages.

I think y'all missed the part when Harsin asked the coach at Auburn if he would decline the penalties for the Jersey selection before the game, while Harsin was at Arkansas state, and the coach at the game did not decline. Thus Malzahn was being quite immoral/unethical in his leadership. Who would want to follow someone's lead that set that kind if example?

( didn't miss )

Just didn't fully understand. It was the one few short or less defined comments that he made.
So was he saying he asked Gus pregame, as a favor (for a bending of the rules) since he'd just left AS as HC

... and that Gus went out of his way to shaft him
... or that Gus didn't even make the effort to say it's ok
... or you don't know how tough it's been making nice to this a-hole
(eta)... or I've haven't forgot (and you guys need to do a better job)

... or none of the above
???

SIAP JBoy interview with Harsin:

Actually asking football related questions

I like how he said he would adapt his offense to his personnel. A refreshing idea right?!

He didn't say, but I think there's also a possibility they won't be running a quick dive play after every 1st down either.

I think he purposely gave a short answer to do two things:

1. He wanted to set the record straight (as I remember posters using that incident as cause to worry about our new coach not knowing the rules and being unprepared)
2. He didn't want to dwell on Malzahn's going back on his word, and make it a big deal

That's a coach who knows how to get his point across with tact and efficiency.

I agree that he handled it well but this situation made me curious since it feels off-brand for Gus. I'd criticize a lot of things about Gus, not sure integrity would be on the list.

Since this story felt really weird/interesting, I decided to look into it. I'm even more confused as to what could have happened.

First, there are official procedures to avoid this situation. You only need written permission from Auburn/SEC (TV deals) prior to the game, which is how USC v UCLA pull it off. So it's not clear why rely on Gus declining penalties when you could just use official process.

Second, it is unclear if the penalty is declinable. The rules effectively allow refs to accept penalties "when the choice is obvious to the referees." I went back and listened to the broadcast. Announcers mentioned the penalty in pregame lead-in before it was even called by refs. Then when it officially was called by ref, the typical "penalty is accepted" language was missing.

I can’t believe that’s still being talked about

He was a first time head coach. The story was funny and I’m sure he learned a valuable lesson from it

Gus shafted him on the Jerseys they mutually agreed not to penalize. I think they didn't realize it was a problem until GameDay or something

Guys, our coach just said that if you don't have the personnel for the scheme you want to run, it's on you to grow as a coach. What!
