I was also impressed with Harold Joiner. He lined up all over the field and looked natural with the ball. He got upfield quick and took some hits. He could definitely be an asset if used .

DJ Williams looked like a Mike Dyer clone and Joiner looked really good. Im impressed with our RB situation this year.

This board told me he was soft, though.

My favorite moment was him lowering shoulder & driving through defender

He didn't make plays like that consistently in high school. If he's added a physical edge to his game he's got a chance to be an impact player

He was in high school. People can change.

Finally got to watch the game this morning. My thoughts

Was a spring game. Nothing truly telling and I dont take a single thing out of what happened

Vanilla on both sides of the ball. Qbs threw well but there was zero threat. Receivers were the brightest spot even though we did not see two of our best.

I think we will struggle with our schedule and new QB this fall. We will probably be better than our record shows. Just a gauntlet

This is why I have reservations about our QB race. Stidham looked like a world beater with no pressure, JS is a all world 7 on 7 QB.

I watched him play a ton in high school. He did run very soft for someone with his size. He rarely would lower his shoulder into someone, he always tried to dance and run around them. It worked fine and wasn't necessarily a bad strategy as he was generally faster than everyone on the field, but he was not a hard nosed runner in High School. He just wasn't. He looked night and day different on Saturday.

This doesn’t and didn’t make him soft.

Would you abuse your body continuously if you could just out-athlete everyone on the field?

Let’s also keep in mind that he was rail thin in high school. He needed to put on some weight.

ETA: Is he a legit 6’4?

In his defense, Joiner was bigger than some of his offensive lineman in high school. The blocking for him was non-existent against any decent team.

A lady that works for us had a kid playing center on that team. He was over 6’ but not much over 200. Watching that poor kid play against the Hoover nose guard was brutal.

Eh, if we want to play the semantics game fine. He played soft, which is what people were trying to argue. He did.

Again, why I said it wasn't necessarily a bad strategy. However, when you are recruiting a RB, for one that was 6'3 215 in HS, not seeing a willingness to really lower your shoulder is a legit concern.

Not sure, haven't seen him recently. In HS he was a legit 6'3 I'd say.

I watched him play a dozen plus games in high school and knew his coaches. The kid was the biggest guy on the field every game and shied away from contact every time he ran. Part of it was him trying to act like a 5”10 rb and make guys miss instead of going through them. Part of it was him being soft.

Not even close to rail thin in HS. He was a monster since 15. From a physical standpoint he was the most impressive kid I’ve seen up close.

I’d more so say he played finesse. Derrick Henry did so early on at Alabama. Which, he did the same in high school because he was the best athlete every time he stepped on the field.

Being soft if a mindset, IMO.

Joiner is one of the best athletes on the field. Nice of him of him to take it easy on a bunch of white boy mountain brook kids

It's probably unfair to call him "soft"

But he absolutely was not a physical runner in high school despite being the largest man on the field most of the time. It's why AU & others initially tried to recruit him as an athlete & sell him on idea of playing more at WR. He balked at first because he saw himself as a bellcow tailback.

LSU sold him on idea that he was going to be that for them up until they landed like 3 RBs within a week & dropped all communication with him. After that experience, he became more amendable to idea of doing more than just playing RB & AU adjusted their pitch to him being another Charles Clay where he would still get to run the ball but also play outside. That seems to be how they are using him right now

But again, I was very excited to see him lower his shoulder & initiate contact Saturday. He learns to use that frame of his as a weapon and doesn't shy away from contact then he's got a chance to be a big time player for AU. I'm not expecting him to have a major role in the offense this year outside of some gadget stuff but I would love to be wrong. He's got a unique skillset that could make him a matchup nightmare
