Willis: 7 of 8 passes for 63 yards and 1 TD
QB competition is definitely with Bo Nix and Joey Gatewood. I give Joey Gatewood the advantage because of experience and the running dynamic.

I was really impressed by Dillingham. All 4 QBs looked like they had been coached. Good decisions across the board as well as accurate passes.

but Joey has a clear advantage running.
I’ve been waiting for this since Marshall left, please let it be happening in the old school Gus offense!

DJW looked very fluid. I think there is a reason he was 2 behind Boobie.
Shivers was running track so we cant forget about him either.

As for that running game advantage:
Seth on Gatewood:
quote:
Once he gets live, he turns into a whole ’nother person,” Williams said. “Like, you couldn’t see it for real with this spring, with the scrimmage, the QB’s not live — but once they’re live, I don’t think, they can’t get back there. If they get back there he’s going to run it and he’s going to still have his eyes downfield to throw it. But he can run it. He can run good.”

I've watched a replay through the ESPN app. Allows you to fast forward and rewind as well.

You'll be back on the Gatewood train, when the QBs are live.
On the local news last night they had a small snippet of a Seth Williams interview. He was calling Gatewood the next Cam and was saying wait to you see him live. Seems like Seth Williams is on the Gatewood train.
ETA: I missed Jang's post on this.

Gonna be a douche and say this with no mention of the source but apparently we need to be holding our horses about any of the QBs on roster and hope that a gooood bit of progress can be made between now and the end of fall camp

Shivers isn't going anywhere. We talking about every down backs.

Best case scenarios in order from a biased supporter:
1. Gatewood wins the job and does well.
2. Nix wins the job and does well.
3. Gatewood is promised and given plenty of quality packages in the QB rotation and stays another year.
Worst case scenarios:
1. With CFB free agency in full swing, Gatewood doesn’t like the role he’s given after losing his desperate bid for starting QB and transfers thus leaving our depth chart very weak again.
2. Nix transfers (not likely given this is his first year plus Auburn legacy imo)
3. Either QB winning the job and midseason controversy builds up. Gus cannot afford ineffective QB play.
4. They both suck (also not likely.)
So basically, if Gus wants to retain both QBs for the season, he’s going to have to be very diplomatic in how he approaches the QB situation while also thinking about his own job. I think it’s clear we need two quality backups as Gus is already on the hot seat himself and we don’t need another Jeremy Johnson starting against Georgia and Alabama. Gatewood having already used up his redshirt would be the first to go. Let Gatewood start but both go to work against Oregon and see which QB wins out. Whichever QB wins out then is the starter and both QBs had every opportunity to win the job. Despite CFB free agency, coaches cannot continue to recruit current players forever so something has to give.
Silver linings of worst case scenarios:
-A starter will be named and QB controversy will be done
- Possible HC firing may prompt a hiring of a coach that can better work with Nix’s strengths assuming Nix stays. Gatewood was Gus’s project and I think he goes.
-We are back to recruiting elite QB recruits as depth is no longer an obstacle.

Let's not undervalue Nix's running ability, too. I think he ran a 4.6 40. I feel like some of this talk is driven because Joey didnt appear to walk away with it. However, as some pointed out, A day game is a small cross section, and not always an indicator of who will start.

Nix is new to the system, so I can deal with this. I’ve since accepted that the Joey Gatewood project may fall through once Gus tried to get Kelly Bryant.

You mean to tell me the 2 freshman qbs battling for the starting job in the spring still have room for improvement?... earth shattering revelation

There were many who thought Neil Cauddle was gonna start over Cam after the 2010 a day game.

This is because normally the qb's look terrible in A day
Even Cam looked just ok
