He got bent over by Sexton.

Steven Leath, the president of Auburn University from 2017 to 2019, negotiated giving then-football coach Gus Malzahn a seven-year, $49 million contract extension in December 2017. Malzahn was fired in 2020, and Auburn committed to buy out the remainder of his contract for more than $21 million. At the time, it set a record for the largest buyout paid by a school.
"You're in a public relations disadvantage," said Leath, who is now executive director of the Council to Advance Hunting and the Shooting Sports. "No matter where you end up on a contract, there will be some people who think the coach should be gone and shouldn't be renegotiated at all. And there will be some people who think you didn't pay him enough because he walks on water. It's hard to win the public relations battle no matter where you come down."
Auburn ($31.2 million) and Nebraska ($25.8 million) led the way in dead money payments, followed by Texas ($21.5 million), Ole Miss ($20.4 million) and Kansas ($20 million).
quote:
….
Leath said he worked directly with Malzahn's agent, Jimmy Sexton, in part because the school was in between athletic directors at the time of his negotiated extension. Leath said the use of agents in coaching contract negotiations "is huge." Pretty much gone are the days of a coach coming in to discuss an employment contract in the same way a vice president of student affairs or a chief of police would.
"It's changed to this dynamic where the agent would prefer you don't even talk to your own employee," Leath said. "And sometimes you have to put your foot down and say, 'Listen, this person works for me. I don't have to go through you.' It's a very difficult, cumbersome process. It's easy for it to get somewhat adversarial. It changes the team spirit of working together for the common goal of advancing the program to much more of an unfun business negotiation."
Gus Malzahn took home $10.7M in dead money from Auburn through Jan. 31, 2021.
The Tigers had recently upset rivals Georgia and Alabama, who were both ranked No. 1 at the time, to reach the 2017 SEC title game. Arkansas had also expressed interest in hiring Malzahn.
With Malzahn's contract extension, Leath said the buyout provision was "unpalatable from our side, but necessary because of the playing field everybody was in at the time. So you take a risk that he'll perform well for two or three or four years and the buyout thing will go away. That's what you're hoping for."
Leath said he did push back on Malzahn's buyout provision and got it reduced from having to pay 100% of the remaining salary to paying 75% of what was left on the deal.
"We made it more favorable for the university," Leath said. "They were still tremendous terms for Gus, don't get me wrong. But they were certainly better for the university than when we started out."
Leath said he got there by adopting the attitude of, "Just, c'mon, let's be reasonable here," and having some individual meetings with Malzahn. "It would have been far better if no agents were involved and you could just sit down and say, 'What's best for the university? What's best for you? What's best for the program long-term?'"
In June 2019, Leath and Auburn mutually parted ways as well. His separation agreement called for him to receive $4.5 million over three years.

Sounds like he doesn't like Sexton

The agent was doing his job and bidded up the ask. Leath thought he won by making the deal a little more reasonable but the ask was already so far extended that the deal was still not reasonable at all. He got worked.
He has fallen off the map according to his new title too.

From the linked article:
quote:I wonder what percentage of that $533.8 million is the direct result of Sexton’s negotiation skills.
From Jan. 1, 2010 to Jan. 31, 2021, public universities in FBS conferences paid out more than $533.6 million in dead money to head coaches and assistant coaches in football and men's and women's basketball, according to an analysis of financial records obtained by ESPN through state open records laws.

In other words, “I’m an idiot, but it was all Sexton’s fault!”

"Council to Advance Hunting and the Shooting Sports"
Sounds like a title you give yourself after you've been given a buyout and would rather hunt than work.

this is very interesting. thanks for sharing.
the comments about working AGAINST your own employee via their agent is really enlightening. i mean, it's how things are now, but still something that's counter-intuitive when you see it the way he frames it. i hadn't thought of it like that.

Ouch
What a Putz. I wonder which stooge on the board of trustees was ultimately responsible for hiring this dickhead.

You know how I know Leath has never played hardball without Leath telling me. That shite right there. If Gus wanted to leave for Arkansas frick em. The ball wasn’t completely in his court. I didn’t have a problem with Gus’ salary as much as I had with his buyout. He could have worked more to get it down. Dude got shitcanned after his comments about Bruce Pearl not too long after this. Total fricking hack

Nah. Leath should have been fired with cause over that contract. He is a grown man and Sexton didn't make him do anything. A sample of the fanbase at the time would have told him we were meh on Gus.

My best AU buddy who lives in Iowa warned me about Leath when he was being interviewed for the gig. His friends who were big ISU boosters were more thrilled we hired him away than they were when we hired 5-19 Chiz

If we are satisfied during the even numbered years I’d say a reasonable extension is deserved. Getting paid for the stars aligning ain’t responsible.

Well very glad he’s gone after this.
He sounds very naive and in over his head.
“Just, c’mon, let’s be reasonable here” got you from 100% to 75%? Sexton had him right where he wanted him the entire time. Which some people hate Sexton cause of this stuff but it’s his job. It’s why these coaches pay him to do it.
You’re going to have to have some balls to negotiate against him which Leath clearly did not have. At some point, you have to see how willing Gus would’ve been to go to Arkansas. Public relations shouldn’t be driving your core decision making. Does it look horrible if we lose a coach to Arkansas? Of course but also there’s nothing preventing you from coming out and saying look what he wanted in his contract wasn’t palatable to us.
In all likelihood though, I would imagine you call the bluff and get a better contract for him to stay at Auburn.
Sexton understands there’s a line that Presidents/ADs aren’t comfortable crossing and he’s going to force you to cross that line. And if you don’t, he’s going to bend you over in negotiations.

I can imagine Arkansas interest was never there. Sexton wanted that deal while Auburn fans were riding a high. And Not Sober minded. Sexton did awesome. He basically played and bent over all of Auburn.

Leath sounds like a naive idiot. You know Sexton was licking his chops when he realized Auburn was without an AD and he got to negotiate Gus' contract extension with Leath.
Sexton: "I'll ask for 100% of his remaining contract in the buyout terms and they'll probably counter with 50%. We will be happy with something like 60-65% of it."
Leath: "What about 75%?"
Sexton: "Seriously? DEAL!"

Sexton really is the best in the business. And that sucks for everyone except him and those he represents.

We never heard the rumor that Gus was going duck hunting in Arkansas.
