If you coach at Florida, you have to expect to win every game in the Swamp. If you do lose one, it should only happen if you are an underdog playing one of the very best teams in the nation and it should be a war.

It appeared to me yesterday that Mullen had the team going into the game expecting to win. So good for him. However, the most impressive part is how Mullen brought the team back after falling behind 21-3. Hate to say it, but that was all coaching.

Mullen kept his head, kept his poise and made it a real fight even though he had lesser talent. Sure it was at home, but that brings its own pressure and Mullen never flinched.

Anyway - the verdict is still not in, but I'm starting to think Mullen is a better coach than I was willing to give him credit for.

They showed him on camera a couple of times when Florida was way down. Dude looked cool as a cucumber.

Sadly, the 2point play was a terrible play call. There are no moral victories at the highest level.

Otyerwise, thought he called a good game but all 60 minutes matter.

He is a good coach, no question. He just has the unfortunate luck of being a good coach in the Saban era

Mullen knows what his program is and knows the types of recruits that fit into that system and style of program. It's why at a place like State where consistency is extremely difficult he almost always had a "good" team, while sometimes having "very good" teams. At Florida, a place where he can do the same thing but with players a step up on the athleticism and talent scale, he will be able (and has been able) to take that baseline consistency up a step.

As always, the deal with Mullen is can he break through against the best of the best teams and take his team to that next step of truly being a national contender. That's really his final step. He's done everything else.

Mullen is a great coach. He had MSU in the Top 5 nationally. He will do very well at UF if UF gives him time and resources to build his program.

I would agree. I never thought he was a bad coach. I am still wondering if he is as good as some on here believe though. He did a heck of a job yesterday, though. Held the team together when it would have been easy to fold the tent up and give in to a beating.

Florida looked really good.

Kirby has led bama for like 80% of the quarters he's played against them over the 4 years that he has

Mullen in year 4 at UF turns a blowout loss into a close loss and now everyone is crowning him

I don't get it.

He's definitely a great offensive mind. I was shocked they ran on Alabama as well as they did. If their defensive players could tackle in the open field they win that game.

The way his team didn’t give up down 21-3 in the first quarter was the most impressive thing. People say he’s purely and Xs and Os kinda guy. Then people are critical of his people skills (usually includes recruiting) and finish with “therefore he’s an NFL coach.”

I disagree. I think he’s goofy as f, and the guy clearly can’t recruit. So he’s bad at first impressions. But, the players on his team seem to really respect him. His teams play mentally tough even when they fall behind. He doesn’t strike me as a rah-rah guy at all, but he seems to extract maximal effort from his players dating back to MSU. I’m not sure this particular skill translates to NFL, and it’s one of his best.

Now that I’m done saying all that, seriously, how is he be so damn bad at recruiting?

Florida was impressive for sure. They got punched early, and I thought it would be blowout city, but they fought back, controlled most of the game after that, and just about took it to OT. Props to them.

I’ll say this Mark Richt was 42-10 in his first 4 seasons with an SEC title so Mullen at 31-10 better be good this season or else…..

I don't think he really was overmatched by Bama's players, there are some good athletes on Florida's team. I do think he outcoached Bama and almost pulled off a win.
