BYU ahead of the curve on NIL
Wonder how long before Alabama, OU, UGA, Florida, Texas etc have 100 players on the sidelines again, like the old days. Or heaven forbid Nike and Oregon...

A deal BYU has made available to its football players could test how much allowing athletes to be compensated by outside companies for name, image and likeness can be used as a competitive advantage.
Last week, BYU announced Built Brands — a Utah-based company that makes protein snacks — will give all 123 members of the Cougars’ football team the opportunity to be paid to promote its products.
Scholarship players can earn $1,000. For walk-ons, players who are not on athletic scholarship, the payment can be equivalent to the cost of a year’s tuition at BYU, which ranges from about $3,000 to $6,000 per semester.
“This is creative and different,” said Blake Lawrence, the CEO of Opendorse, a firm that works with schools on NIL-related matters from brand building to compliance. “The first-move advantage here for both BYU and Built is very evident.”
BYU’s arrangement with Built drew national attention for the joyous celebration it sparked among the players and because it seems to provide the Cougars a way to circumvent the NCAA’s scholarship-limit rules. Teams that play in the highest division of college football can only have 85 scholarship players on the roster.

I get to waste 4 years bothering impoverished people in their country AND earn $1000?

Nike can put a player in a National commercial. Golden Flake and Milo's cannot do that.

Mormons are rich but they play by the rules. The rules have changed.

Looks like it's going to hurt OU. You guys just lost the best WR in the 2022 class because of a "business decision".

Well, I should have said "100+ quality players", which has not really been the case since the 85 scholarship limit. They used to stockpile.

Yep. National is the key word here. Nike doesn't have a sponsoring division. They do have a marketing division though and they will likely continue the trend of marketing their products via proven national sports teams and athletes.
No one nationally gives a frick about an Oregon football player, at least not until they win something. Now Nike definitely has a marketing interest in the University of Oregon, as they have bought them lock stock and barrel. They dont need individual players, they already own the team itself, just like they "own" 90% of the teams in the SEC.

Paying for a scholarship - how is this not a violation of the 25/85 rule??

The businesses pay the players. The players pay for school.

But, that is really a distinction without a difference.
The NCAA needs to adopt some uniform rules for this. Right now it is only subject to state law, whatever that is.

Right? Why would Milo's advertise to people that can't even purchase their product, and it isn't even a choice in restaurants outside the South? So, walk me through your marketing pitch to Milo's with regards to marketing Sweat Tea to people in Utah, NYC, Chicago..

But I hope they can put a stop to this. Make them ineligible for post season play or something.

About 5 years ago I was golfing a lot at Austin Country Club and met a really nice BYU grad. About the 5th time I talked to him, he told me his life story. He was having a ton of issues getting contacts so he decided to solve the problem himself, he started 1-800 contacts in his dorm room with a few hundred dollars to his name. Ended up selling it for $900 million dollars. Super impressive and friendly guy, I only met the one wife though.
