Unintended Consequences of Playoff Expansion

12 teams is too many in my opinion. Way too many.
It will no longer even be considered an accomplishment to make it to the playoffs.
Teams' strategies will change now that they don't have to beat the best team on their schedule, they just have to beat everyone else.
What's the incentive to win in the regular season now that you only have to end up in the top 12?
We'll probably have 3-4 SEC teams in the playoffs every year. The SEC Championship - meaningless, the biggest SEC matchups - meaningless.
If they're gonna do 12 teams, then maybe the top 2 seeds should get a first round bye or something to add meaning and incentive to the regular season. This shite sucks.

… you have to win games in the regular season to qualify for the top 12

The SEC will be better off to drop the championship game.

Amazing the only teams against this are the ones who receive the most mulligans.

Games still mean something. Top 4 teams get a bye. Playing for a bye will be important t

Better off for whom? Alabama and Georgia, or a 3 loss team that manages to get to the SECCG? In 2007, 9-3 (6-2) Tennessee won the East and went to Atlanta. Now they get a shot at the playoffs.

In that mentality, does the 1st game of a 5 game series become "meaningless?" No. You have to play the game and see how the cards fall. It gives you leeway, it doesn't make it meaningless.
Have that mentality and see if you end up in top 12. In this new world, I would hope the CFP committee would truly rank teams off of their schedule and team makeup over W/L. Most of the time now, if you're in the P5, if you're undefeated you're highly ranked...even if your schedule is weak. Shouldn't be that way. If you're UGA/Clemson, Alabama/Miami, for example, you shouldn't fall 3-5 spots just because you lost especially if competitively. That happens today and you need things above you to happen or a conference championship to bring you back to life.
We should be rewarding schools for setting up new OOC match ups that create a fun and buzzworthy regular season. Not a pay to play scheme so you can get 2-3 sure wins in hopes you make it through your conference schedule. Creating those matchups would make the regular season more intriguing, create more revenue, create new matchups, and show more competition.

I agree. After LSU had their 2019 run I realized 4 is fine. Typically, you only have a 3 or 4 worthy teams anyway.
Expansion is fun for teams that can never crack that Top 4.

Yeah, except if you're Alabama, you're not worried about losing..

Then you shouldn't care how many teams are in the playoffs since you aren't worried about losing.

There’s a world in which 4 SEC teams could make the playoffs, maybe 5 one year? Wouldn’t that mean the SEC revenue is going to jump even more with playoff money?

I haven't decided whether I'm a fan or not of this proposed system. However, I do believe that talent should realistically spread out over time with more teams having a "chance" which is something killing CFB right now.

Why is Alabama so mad about this

Posted on 6/10/21 at 2:58 pm to CrimsonClover
My issue is WHY have 5 Power conferences & a system that eliminates AT LEAST 1 conference from postseason just over the format for postseason?
