The Latest On Asa Newell
2024 five-star forward Asa Newell recently announced a top-four of Alabama, Georgia, Gonzaga and Texas. Newell will take an official visit to Georgia this upcoming weekend, marking his last stop before making a decision.
The Athens, G.A. native has long been considered a Georgia lean. His older brother, Jaden, already plays for the Bulldogs and his long-standing relationship with assistant coach Erik Pastrana has given Georgia the edge.
According to a source familiar with the recruitment, Alabama has made this decision a two-horse race. The major selling points for the Tide are style of play and NBA preparedness. A portion of Newell’s camp believes he would benefit long-term from the NBA connections and skill development Alabama can provide. Alabama hopes Newell is willing to make a business decision as opposed to an emotional one that keeps him in Athens.
Gonzaga had a similar pitch as Alabama, but location and distance from his family have made it an unrealistic destination.
Georgia benefits significantly from getting Newell’s last visit. Mike White has an opportunity to close the deal and bring in the first five-star recruit of his tenure at Georgia. If Newell gets out of that visit without a commitment, look for Nate Oats to make one last strong push to secure his second major commitment of the 2024 class.
A public announcement of his final two is expected sometime this week, per source.

Are Newell and Reid both takes or is it one or the other? Between the 2 I would think I want Reid more because of his relationship with Sherrill but I will gladly take either

I would think that they are both takes.

They have to be. Both are top 20 players. You take those if they want in and there's room, then you figure out how the pieces fit together later. I think we should be the pretty obvious choice for both. FSU and UGA both fricking suck and freshman bigs expected to come in and be the man on an otherwise mediocre roster tend to struggle a lot.

Reid also seems like he could be more of a big wing than 4 so you'd hope they could work together.

Recently cut his list to Kentucky, Alabama and Indiana.
Kentucky going all out.

He's listed as a SF on one site, and PF on the other (can't remember which was which). So basically, he's a wing. Looking at Reid's film, he looks like he could play either.
But yeah, there's no way in hell they aren't both takes. And adding Reid with Sherill may even help with Zoom (though he's a Tacoma, WA native, so I could see him wanting to stay out west.
One thing that made me laugh on the recent Boogie Fland Reddit thread, was a quote from a Michigan fan...

Alabama is literally on everyone’s list lol
Apparently it's not just us. Fans are noticing everyone is looking at Bama. It's not just in our heads. We are legit threats on an absurd number of blue chip prospects.

A little off topic but this is the crowd that may be able to help. Have any of you guys ever coached youth basketball? We're starting a 4th grade team and it looks like I may end up coaching. It's associated with the school system so we'll be teaching the concepts they use at the high school, which are very similar to what Oats does.

I'm a basketball official. You'll have about two guys who can shoot plus have some basketball iq. The others, just get them to grasp the concept. You'll just need them to have good hustle. As the season progresses, the real fun thing you'll see is the development from the first practice till last game.

Bravo is on target. Keep it simple. Don't dump on them. Let them have fun. Ride your bell cows. Let everyone in for at least a couple of minutes. It won't matter.

Never coached but played all the way thru high school. I’ve only “coached” Little League Baseball for my nephews.

2 losses the whole season??? I’ll take it!
In all seriousness, last year’s team benefited a lot from the oversees trip. It may take a few more non-conf games for this team to gel given the roster turnover.
So, let’s say 3 losses. 27-3 are reasonable expectations, right?

It's gonna be amazing to clinch 3 out of 4 regular season titles in Rupp in late February. All in!

At that age, keep it to give and gos and pick and rolls. And good luck with that happening after Steph Curry. But that age, it's mainly teaching them basic fundamentals and strategy.

I’ve had the unfortunate experience of watching junior high basketball. I can’t imagine 4th grade basketball.
