247 - Dabo and Ohio State

quote:

"Obviously, that's a tough question to answer in my position because we feel like we're definitely one of the best four teams in the country and there's nothing that's going to happen in that game next week for Clemson or Notre Dame that's going to change that in my opinion and that's based on data," Swinney said. "It's almost like you've got to have 120 hours to get a business degree and yet these people over here only need 60 hours to get a business degree."

quote:

"I think any time you step in between the lines, the game of football, there's a lot that can happen — a lot. I mean, heck — in 2017, we lost to a three-win or four-win Syracuse team and still went to the Playoffs. So anything can happen. Guys can get hurt. There's a lot. So I think the fact that we're going to have 11 games as well as the SEC teams — I mean, you look at Florida and Texas A&M and Alabama. I mean, these teams are going to have 11 games this year."

quote:

"Obviously, as coaches, we don't control any of that stuff. So I do think that our team has played incredibly well. We had a double-overtime loss at the No. 2 team in the country now in Notre Dame, who's a great team and an unbelievable game. Again, no matter what happens for Notre Dame or Clemson, nothing changes in my mind, as far as both of these teams being in the top four."

quote:

"I wouldn't have an issue with it because, again, it's not my position to have an issue with it — my position is to coach my team, regardless of whoever, I just think there has to be some type of standard. I just think it would be — if I was on a committee, it would be hard for me to leave out a 10-1 Texas A&M or an 11-game Florida team over a team that's played six games. That would be hard for me if I was on a committee, but I'm not on the committee. So it doesn't really matter."

quote:

"It doesn't mean they're not a great team and couldn't win the whole thing. I just think that there has to be — I just think, from a big-picture standpoint, I would lean toward rewarding the teams that have been all in because it's been an incredible challenge."

This is the main thing I don't like about Dabo. He seems to pick battles that are not really his. Ready to die on any hill. It's not always a good idea to let everyone know your opinions.

It also doesn't help that he's not that confident his team *with* Lawrence could beat ND.

He's right.

It's not the fault for the rest of college football that the Big10 decided to pull all the BS they did.

They should face the consequences of that bad leadership. Especially since they were seemingly politically motivated. In those 5 games Ohio St has played so far, only 1 of them has more than 2 wins and they barely won it.

People would be coming apart if it was Alabama.

He’s scared. Ohio state is one of the best teams in college football. If they played 6, 8, 10 or 2 games

This part is bullshite. If ND beats them again there's no serious argument for including them. Everything else he said I agree with. Is it fair that Ohio State lost multiple opportunities to play through no fault of their own? No. That's a B1G problem though. The bottom line is that everyone else is having to put 5-6 more games of wear and tear on their bodies, while risking injury (and the possibility of losing) while Ohio State gets to rest up and have everything handed to them. frick that.

On this we agree. Who have they played? The Buckeyes are going to get into the playoffs based ENTIRELY on preseason hype and not résumé.

I agree. Bama is #1. But after that, why is it fair to punish TAMU/UF/CU/ND for playing a full season?

Dabo knows in all likelihood Clemson is getting matched up in the Rose Bowl against Ohio State.

Sounds like he recognizes the advantage of rest, a lack of nagging injuries accumulated over the season, and having a small sample size and weak schedule that hasn't shown a lot of things on film compared to others.

Based upon what? Certainly not games played. Recruiting rankings? In that case Georgia should go to the playoffs.

Right. The problem with dismissing their lack of games played with "but they're so good!" is that you're basically saying that the playoffs can go ahead and be determined around the middle of October and the rest of the season is a waste of everyone's time. If Alabama was sitting at 6-0 and had blasted everyone on our schedule by 40+ at that point and Saban declared that we were shutting it down until the playoffs everyone would lose their goddamn minds. Ohio State kind of backdoors literally that exact same thing and people defend it as fair. It's insane.

yes, one of the most talented teams. Possibly not the most deserving based on the next couple of weeks and who is left standing.

BIG 10 sounds like they were scared to play football. If you miss the playoffs you have only your own conference to blame. They voted politics ahead of football, and you might pay the price.

No chance of that on that fast track inside at Indy. Could they win? Sure, it's possible but blast ain't happening.
