Analogy - Why 4 & 5-wide Spread Offenses slaughter good Defenses

Make soccer goals three times as wide as they are now. Watch the average scores skyrocket.
College defenses aren't worse, they just have 3 times as much area to cover.
Then, add the RPO which compounds the D's problems.

Thank you for this analogy. This concept was incredibly difficult to understand before you put it in such simple terms.

How do you come up with this shite?

What shite, moron?
I've read 100 posts stating that defenses suck. They DON'T suck. They have at least 3 times as much active area to cover.

Again, if it was so easy to understand, why are there 100 posts a day saying the defenses suck?
They don't suck. It is just a whole new ball game.

I think a better analogy would be if soccer suddenly changed the rules to allow all players to use their hands while on the opponents' side of the field. Football has progressively taken away some of the things defenses used to do to keep offenses in check. You wouldn't see nearly so many inside slants to the middle of the field if WRs knew that when the ball arrived the safety would be too to destroy them. Those kinds of hits are flagged now. Same thing with the QB. Hitting the QB just after he threw the pass used to be accepted defensive strategy to shake him up and make him want to get rid of the ball faster. Again, you can't do that anymore. Plus they aren't calling holding as tightly and they call PI if the defender so much as breathes on the WR. They need to shift the rules back towards the defenses to make things more even.

Gotta have both the Jimmie's and the Joe's as well as a competent coaching staff to make it work

Are you trying to justify why Mississippi State scored more against LSU (44) than in their next three games COMBINED (30)?

Exactly, offenses have improved, but rule changes have immensely facilitated their effectiveness.

offenses are dramatically more limited in what they can do vs defenses

Offenses changed and defenses have trouble adapting to stop it, therefore the defenses suck. Pretty simple

Of course they are, it has always been that way. The offense has a built-in advantage over the defense in that they know what play is going to be run. The rules in place to limit what the offense can do are designed to mitigate that advantage so that in the end it's a pretty even playing field. Are you arguing that rules changes over the past twenty years or so have not shifted that balance in favor of the offense? That would be a pretty bold and clearly farcical position if so. Gus, is that you?

Agreed.
But when you have that, "They can't F'n stop it!"

You think this is the first time in the history of football teams are running 4 and 5 wide?
I think it has more to do with the amount of football these kids are playing as youngsters. They are either playing flag football, going to specialty camps (passing, lineman, kicking camps are all over the place), or playing competitive 7on7 leagues. Not to mention their regular games in the fall. That just wasn't anywhere near as widespread as it is now 12-15 years ago.
These QBs and WRs come into college much better prepared than they were 10 yrs ago. These coaches see the talent at those positions and have more confidence to open their offense up way more now. All that along with rule changes have given an advantage to WRs and QBs.
We've seen the evolution (especially in the SEC) from taking 3 or 4 shots at huge plays a game 10 yrs ago. To taking 3 or 4 shots a half 5 yrs ago. To taking 2 or 3 huge shots every other possession now. Coaches have seen that there isn't as much risk as there used to be in playing like that to where it has become, not a risk, but almost a necessity to win nowadays.

quote:nope. football field is still the same size. still the same number of defenders. terrible analogy. the analogy would have to include 2 more goalies at the very least.
3 times as much area to cover.

Yes.
As much as they are now? Yes. Anyone with a brain knows that.

Changing the goal dimensions as an analogy for players be more spread out on the field. I've heard of moving the goalposts, but not spreading them.

It's not as if 4 and 5 WR sets are brand new this season.
