I do want to give him a shout out though. He is a great guy all around. My kid is a RedCoat Trumpet and JD is constantly showing the band a lot of love. The RCs love him and he's made it a point to come into the stands with them. Really appreciate the support he sends the band's way. DGD!

He's been my favorite player on the team pretty much since LSU 2018.
And his personality shows on the televised games. He encourages the kicker and backups, etc... he definitely comes off as the big teddy bear who wants to do right for all of Dawgnation.
I think we have good guys on the DL behind him. But he is like Roquan Smith with our defensive planning. We can scheme an entire game based upon what he can do. We might be fine in 2021 without him, but everyone is going to be asked to play differently in terms of scheme and responsibilities.

Monty Rice.

Monty Rice is the leader of the defense. Others may be more talented, but he's the bedrock of the group.

I've thought really highly of Monty Rice since we signed him, and I think he's the Defensive MVP this year on an absolutely incredible, best in my lifetime UGA D. BUT...Nakobe Dean will be the single best LB in UGA history next year. Better than Roquan who is my favorite UGA player of all time. He is SO SO SO GOOD.

Rice definitely has cleaned up more plays.
But I've had more wow moments from Dean either in coverage, attacking the QB, or going sideline to sideline.

Roquan played at such a high level in 2017 that it’s hard to predict that for Dean, but Dean is better than Roquan ever was as a freshman or sophomore so it’s definitely not impossible.

Richard LilEasy Lecounte. He’s the heart and soul of the defense.

Sometimes you just see someone who is on a different level. Felt like that watching Gurley run in college. When he was healthy, he was playing a different game than everyone else on the field. Dean is that caliber player.

Eric Stokes is so damn good. He just quietly goes about dominating guys. The broadcasts have talked about Campbell a lot but he's gotten taken advantage of a few times.
Lecounte has been good too. Cine has the chance to be even better I think.
Monty Rice is always in the right spot and as others have said, Dean has Roquan potential. Tindall and Q Walker have also been quite good.
Ojulari has taken himself to a potential top 60 draft pick. Adam Anderson is almost unstoppable on passing downs. Nolan smith has been disappointing IMO.
Jordan Davis is immovable. Wyatt has been really solid. I think Travon walker and herring have been underwhelming so far. I thought walker was gonna become a star this year.

Stokes will allow guys to get by him (by being aggressive at the line or on underneath cuts). But stokes has the speed to recover. I've seen 2 times where receivers had him by a step but the QB couldnt find the WR. Being aggressive is what makes stokes great.

I wouldn't say that Nolan has been disappointing. I have seen about 4 plays where he sucked in on the line and had no chance to seal the edge. And being disciplined to his edge was something that I bragged about to Tennessee and Auburn fans (he has made a liar out of me). But he was dominant against Arkansas holding the edge. He is a big, strong, smart kid who is getting better.

Bama fans dont even know.
LSU fans are in denial (their only run game for 3 quarters was Burrow... and Bama doesnt have a Burrow).

I disagree. Herring and Walker reset the offensive line. Davis isnt plugging 6 gaps on his own. Herring and Walker are creating pass rush as well. They are a handfull and that opens up the interior for ILBs and exterior for safeties and CBs.

It seems like he is always where the ball is. Sometimes it looks like the opposing QB has an an all-day pocket, then Dean or Herring are all over him.

Agreed. Brooks Austin has a film study on Bamas offense that is worth checking out.
He shows the good and bad on Mac and his fundamentals. Deep balls with pressure are often short/underthrown. But the stud receivers adjust to them.
I dont see stokes/campbell catching up if a step behind waddle/smith. But if we pressure, they have as good a chance as the receiver to make the play.
The other variable (that we rarely know) is if they are expecting over the top help (lecounte/cine) and if that is why they play aggressive technique underneath.

Mac Jones actuality looks like what Fromm probably would've looked like in that system. At least to me.

Maybe. From the film study, Jones looks more accurate at all distances.
But the consensus from Bama fans is that Jones knows presnap where to go better than Tua (who does that sound like) and gets through his progressions efficiently to find the open target. Tua would check 1, check 2 and then try to force some sort of play where Jones gets to the open guy quicker and delivers on target.

Yep, processing information quickly aka surveying the field is a significant aspect of the QB position. Talent is important but you have to get into a play they works against how the defense is aligned and then you have to either pick out an open receiver or run as necessary. The best athletic QB's can run/rollout and still look for open receivers when the defense comes up to stop the run. This is why I am always in favor of finding the most athletic QB we can get.

Hate to play a cop out card but the overall defense in general is so damn impressive. We have playmakers all over field. Our 2017 D was great and I think probably the only player I’d take from that D over the 2020 one is Roquan. We’ve got something truly special on that side of the ball and I really hope we can turn it into a championship season.
