What was his downfall at Auburn? I know he had a bad 2012, but what could he have done to keep his job? The guy knows his stuff on the SEC Network.

He could have made a few more church donations.

He lost the team. We had a pretty bad coaching staff overall, but the talent alone should have been good enough to at least make a bowl game in 2012 (as evidenced by basically all the same players plus a new QB going to the natty the year after). Listening to some of the beat writers and former players, he got a little too big for his britches after the NC (stuff like requiring players to make appointments with a secretary to meet with him; imposing a curfew, etc.), so that once things started looking down, the team just kinda quit on him

From what I have heard, he felt he didnt get enough credit for 2010, everyone praised Gus. He lost the team and coaches from his pride and distrust. Everything collapsed from there

Take away that 2010 Cam Newton season and Chizik is at best a low level mediocre coach. His record at Auburn sans that season was 19-19.

Because he has shown little fire and desire to coach again and prefers broadcasting I see no reason any school would seek him out.

It is unusual for a guy under 60 with a championship ring to not be a head coach some place.

He's a solid football coach, but I think Coach Chizik got a little arrogant after the NC. Even in 2011, you could smell something was wrong. We went 8-5 that year, but all the losses were blowouts, which pissed off a lot of the fans. Then 2012 started, and the team completely quit on him about midway through the season (if I had to pick a point, I would say the Arkansas game). Unacceptable failure of leadership. He got fired because there didn't appear to be any way for him to climb out of the hole he had dug for himself.

Bad thing about it was that the talent was there, which became obvious the following year. Coach Chizik is a good example of the phrase "pride goeth before the fall." Still like him and am proud of him for the NC, but he really didn't give the Auburn admins any choice but to fire him. I do wish he would try to coach somewhere again, but I also really like him on the SEC Network!

Chiz seems to have kind of mailed it in after 2010. It appeared that Gus getting so much of the credit really bothered him so he changed the offensive system and that didn't work out. We didn't recruit high character guys and team discipline suffered. He let off on discipline for a while through 2011 in sort of championship afterglow and clamped down too hard (Curfews, etc) after some bad incidents. The players weren't used to it and rebelled. Thus we had the horror of 2012. I remember sitting in the stands at the 2012 Texas A&M game when Manzell was obviously being told to just go and run around to try and not run up the score but only a couple of guys on our defense were still trying, so he couldn't stop scoring. That's why Gus fired everybody, even though some of them were good assistant coaches. He needed a cultural restart.

Aside from the terrible record, the revelation that Chizik hired a private security firm to enforce curfew off-campus helped put the nail in the coffin.

He is great in the booth, I wish CBS would kick out Danielson and replace him with Chizik.

Recruited for the spread then decided the Power game that Bama was running was the way to go forward.

if you believe message board rumors there was internal fighting not only within the roster but also within the coaching staff

trooper and chizik both were reportedly getting on non-speaking terms with each other as both had separate coaching camps set up

one of the players spoke publicly about it during a press conference in 2012 i believe it was ricardo louis i dont really remember but i do know he publicly said in a press conference in mid october of 2012 that "This team has no leadership everybody talks about they want to win but no ones showing it on the field"

lutzy came to the defense of the team trying to hush it up. but it didnt work

i remember reading alot of posts on auburn boards most notably aufamily folks saying they saw coaches and players jawing with each other on sidelines during games

one guy on aufamily said he sat right behind the sidelines of the auburn coaching staff during the ulm game and that he saw several coaches and players jawing back and forth

i was at the ulm game i didnt see anything like that but then again i wasnt sitting behind the coaches sideline

it also didnt help that chizik had his own personal watchdog spying on van-gorder and lefty during practice

chizik was actually caught on tv during the lsu game that year shouting something in leftys year during the final minutes if you can read lips then it was "I needed the yards for the field goal." and lefty just nodded his head and said "Yeah"

I have heard many different things as to what went wrong. I have heard disgruntled players say he became a total control freak and treated them like NAzi Germany...then on another front I have heard that he delegated too much to his Assistants and then ended up losing the team.
