Due to COVID per a Cecil Hurt Tweet.

Thought this was risky career wise considering he was out of league last year, then I saw he's still entitled to a 150k stipend.

He lost a family member to COVID apparently, so definitely understandable

3-time Superbowl champion and 2-time national champ and all-around Bama good guy, Donta Hightower has opted out of the season. He just had a youngun so he has a lot to think about. This one will leave a mark.

Andre Smith opting out too. NFL is facing a big problem

Some of these guys who are fat, rich and happy can basically take a year long vacation, not lose their roster spot and still earn 150k. Not a bad deal. I’d be tempted. Should create some opportunities for young, hungry players though.

You are correct but what you are in essence saying is that the 2020 NFL will more resemble the XFL or USFL this season.

Or sports and a pandemic just don't mix. Instead of champagne in the locker room this season it might look more like it was hit with a molotov cocktail.
Sports, according to the numbers that we're tracking, made a lot more sense in April, May, and June then it does going forward. And it didn't make any sense in April, May, and June.
Opting out is going to be the phrase of the fall sports.

Too bad mere mortals like us can't opt out of our jobs and not be fired. If I said I didn't feel like coming to work because I was afraid of the virus, I would be fired.
Probably just me, but I hope every player who opts out loses their contract and isn't paid this year.
In the real world you have to work to be paid.

Well, when they opt out, they only get $150,000 for this year from what I understand. Still, 90%^ of the public would take "only" $150k all day every day!

Meh. The death rate of this virus is going to end up being far less than 1%. If you have 99.6% odds of survival for the chance to go make millions, you gonna sit at home? It's just not logical. Most of us are at more risk of dying every time we hop in our cars and drive to the grocery store. Does that stop us? Of course not. Every decision in life is a risk/reward decision. For these young, elite athletes, their risk is probably in the .0001 percentile. It's basically a non-factor statistically. Now, I get guys who live with a high-risk person wanting to keep them safe--but for many millions--I'll move out for 3 months and live in my own apartment. Just seems like a big overreaction by a huge portion of our society to something that's basically 99.5 percent non-lethal.

If only the damn virus was only transmissible through anal intercourse with water buffalo...
If the whole country caught it at a 1% death rate, what's 1% of 383 Million people?

Sure, but the NFL minimum for a player with one year of experience 2020 is $675,000. They're getting less than 1/4 of what a second year guy that barely made the roster will get. Also, while they get to count the year towards becoming a free agent, they don't get the year credited to a contract - meaning that if they have a back loaded deal that would pay a lot next season they won't get it. Guys that opt out get their 2020 contract salary in 2021.
Also, guys like Warmack and Smith were for different reasons hanging on to their careers by a thread. Odds are good by sitting out 2020, they've both played their last down of NFL football.
I get the sentiment that says the minimum wage grocery clerk has to work, you should go to work too - and I don't disagree in spirit - but if these guys are willing to forego the amount of money that's in play and very likely for some their entire careers then I don't see how you can read much more into it than they're really that scared of the virus.

In the real world you have to work to be paid.
In the real world everyone has different skills which lead to different jobs. Some of those jobs have more benefits and perks than others. What applies in your job doesn't apply to someone who can make money playing football. That's life.
Can't blame guys for taking advantage of those perks.

Yeah. But most day jobs don’t call on you to be in close, physical contact with co-workers for three hours. A decent percentage of those day jobs have also adjusted to being remote work.

Not even a remotely legitimate question if you're going to vastly overstate both the total death rate and the population.
