Pretty sure this isn't the "first". Admiral Ackbar was almost their new mascot several years ago.

Still would have been 100% behind that.

Ole Miss Admirals would be dope tbh. Would give the rivalry with the Commodores some juice, and would stick in the craw of Leach's Pirate caricature.

OM was a vote or two short from being located on the coast (Biloxi I thinK). I wonder if we would have had a more nautical mascot if that would have happened.

We could have been actual sharks instead of "Land Sharks".

Student newspaper at OM was actually pretty good when I was in undergrad. It was at the same time a student came up with the idea as Admiral Ackbar (Admiral of the REBEL alliance ships in Star Wars) for mascot. Everyone found it pretty hilarious. Never had an actual chance at that time. Now that we have a "land shark" (RIP Tony) anything could happen.

UNLV sacked their Rebel Mascot and I'm not sure if their Mascot is even connected to the Civil War

It is. It's named Beauregard.

Star Wars would never associate themselves with the Confederacy. It's why Lucas didn't sign off on that when that was a thing.

2005 would have been interesting with Katrina.

There's absolutely no evidence that Ole Miss was adopted because the plantation owner's wife was called Ol' Missus. As you can see within the comments, the only people who make this claim are MSU fans who just try to make us look bad.

But if we do move on from Rebels, we should go back to the Flood for sure.

There should be no "if" scenario. You're giving an inch by even entertaining the idea.

Trust me, I don't want to move on from it. But honestly, I am not going to be surprised when it does change. I think it's just a matter of time.

Oh please. "Rebels" has been on the chopping block for years. I understand getting mad about losing "Ole Miss", but no shark fan should be surprised when "Rebels" disappears.

Get rid of Rebels all you want. We need a new mascot anyways. But do not touch Ole Miss. That would be like renaming Auburn to maybe West Georgia University.

Maybe they should change their Mascot to the Mudcats, lots of Catfish in Mississippi

Catfish is to Mississippi like Beef is to Omaha or to Texas

Ole Miss Mudcats, a Mascot that is found throughout the State, they could do a lot worse

I agree. It would suck if we adopted a bug mascot

Don't get mad that those that created the GT Mascots of the Yellow Jacket and the Ramblin' Wreck, were so far ahead of their time that they were able to come up with non Offensive Mascots more than a Century ago when there was no incentive to do so

So explain why the Leadership at your favorite College wasn't smart enough to do the same thing?

If they were smart, they'd be avoiding a huge shitstorm now, but they were not, so the unnecessary drama that your school is catching now is a result of their own making
