I know we're talking about tradition and it's about the principle of the thing, but Landsharks is honestly a way cooler name. And they can do the little fin on the helmet thing every time they wreck shop on a big play. Unique names like that are just better than tried sports names like "Rebels." Arkansas used to be the Cardinals. Does anyone seriously think Cardinals sounds more badass than Razorbacks?

Ole Miss has great uniforms. I say embrace Landsharks and go out in style. It's way better than that Black Bears shite or whatever, too.

Yep. Some out of state students will tell us how we need to change the name. Crazy times!

Black Bears is appropriate. Mississippi Black Bears, Mississippi Land Sharks. Ole Miss is probably offensive to some as well. There are no Bears or Fish mascots in the SEC.

They'll eventually attack "War Eagle" because the original eagle was owned by a confederate veteran.

I doubt Ole Miss will ever give up the "Rebels" name, but I can absolutely see Ole Miss converting to "Mississippi" in all regards.

Why would they get rid of Ole Miss?

The wife of the plantation slave owner was often referred to as Ole Miss by the slaves.

Considering 70% of the student body (and has been for a decade) and virtually most of the wealthiest donors are out-of-state residents as well, I'd say this is a drastically misguided statement.

Been saying for some time that if Ole Miss or Rebels is changed I also am done. 20+ yr season ticket holder. Didn't agree with previous decisions on Col. Reb, Dixie or From Dixie with Love but stayed the course. I simply can't abide the "I'm offended and it has to go culture."

This is a pretty good example of why education in the south is so far behind.

"zOmG, they want to change their football nickname, throw away the entire institution of higher learning!!"

Well actually it was “Ol Missus” according to Mississippi State fans. Which is actually a term used in Australia.

In Australian English, the word "Missus" is used as a slang word in its own right, as opposed to it being just a pronunciation of "Mrs.".

For example:

Harry said he couldn't stop and chat because his missus wanted to go shopping.

fricking idiots.

That's terrible for Ole Miss if they decide to go that route. I'd be done sending my money to the university if my school decided to go in that direction.

And that won’t be the end. Far from it. Ole Miss showed they’d cave in the 80s and the left has been moving the goalposts on them ever since. They’ll never give enough.

LSU was at one time occasionally referred to as “Ole Lou” In the early 20th century and “the Ole War Skule,” the latter harkening back to the school’s founding as a military school.

“Ole Lou” never seemed to have really caught on, but the “Ole War Skule” still crops up in sports articles now and again.

I’m fine losing Rebels as long as Ole Miss stays...We need a new mascot rebranding anyways. I want to be the Ole Miss Blues.

Initially read that as “Ole Miss escorts” which sounded very appropriate.
