Hello my fellow ranters. I hope you and your families are well and safe during these difficult times.
Anyway this is what I'm hearing in Advertising and TV circles:
Media Advertising is frozen now as Media Advertisers realize that, despite TV viewership going up while everyone quarantines at home, ratings and eye balls are worth much less now and for the next 6-12 months because of a lack of discretionary spending. This is going to greatly affect sports that rely on tv revenue(which a lot of the sports we watch). The domino is that TV networks have already started hinting at re-negotiation of current TV contracts. This going to domino into schools getting less TV revenue, at least temporarily, even if the season is played. However, not playing the season will lead to massive shortfall that will cause several programs to seek gov't bailout.
Long story short, they will do everything to play the 2020 season in full and with fans in attendance(because the loss in TV revenue will be made worse with a loss of ticket revenue and local revenue(hotels, Bars restaurants, etc).
2020 season
Right now, the only option for playing a 2020 season in full and with fans in attendance will be a February 13th start to the season with the regular season ending on May 8. This gives teams 13 weeks to play 12 games. The plan is to move the entire season as it was set for fall 2020. Schools playing in nuetral site games are beginning to make calls places like Jerryworld and Mercedes Benz dome to ensure availability in an effort work on moving the entire season to the Spring of 2021. UF and UGA have been told the city of Jax will accommodate any date if the season is moved to spring.
Conference Championships will be played on May 15th, the CFP and a few bowls on May 22nd. Most big bowls and the National Title will take place over memorial day weekend.
This is what UF's Schedule would like in this scenario
Fall 2021 Season
The plan is to move the start date to Early November with most rivalry games(including WLOCP) on NYD 2022 which takes place on a Saturday.
The season will end in late Jan/Early Feb with the national title game and big bowl games to be played in early MArch 2022 right before March Madness
2022 Season
Everything goes back to normal.
Any announcement on this could comes as early as May and as late on July.
Also, the White House is putting pressure on governors to play NFL and CFB in the fall but this might not be possible given the trajectory of Covid-19

College football is not gonna schedule regular season games for January and February. Can you imagine playing fball outdoors in Salt Lake City, UT, Laramie, WY, and Madison, WI in January and February?

Big Ten is pushing for summer games. The Southern schools said that can't be done due to heat-health issues.

summer isn’t happening and fall will be too much of a risk. A season in the spring of 2021 is in the works and it will be a full season absent some game bowl games. They are working out the complications with stadiums and TV. Media Ad Buyers are pushing for Spring 2021 as well
Yes, the first half of the spring season will be full of bad weather. Yes, it will go up against March madness and yes there could be complications with the NFL draft, but it’s going to happen.

This would be crushing for the XFL if it were to happen.

If they did that, how would they get it back to fall the next season?

They would start the Fall 2021 season in November.
Everything would be back to normal fall of 2022

So they are going to put off football until spring, but start hoops on time? I only ask this because you mentioned going up against March Madness.

This seems plausible. Keep us posted

Play the season at the height of flu and covid season?

Flu season isn’t a problem and there is no evidence that Covid-19 will naturally decimate in warm weather. The spread in the Southern Hemisphere, which is exiting summer and entering fall, leads everyone to believe that warm weather doesn’t stop this. University epidemiology departments are universally advising that the combination of herd immunity, treatment drugs and vaccine will make the second wave of Covid-19 much easier to deal with.

So you're telling me LSU can win two National Championships in the same year? I'm okay with that.
ETA - just read the second part of the post.
