Did Saban underachieve with two of the best QBs he’s ever had?

It’s weird that we only won one and it took both of them to do it.

The decline of the defense?
Defense wins championships.
Defense wins championships.

Most overrated coach ever. He discovered that the keys to success were actually just Dodge Charger keys. Those don't work as well anymore. Real men drive trucks

During the 4 years of the Jalen/Tua era
- 52-5 Overall (29-3 SEC)
- 2 SEC Titles
- 1 National Title
- 2 National Runners Up
- 4 Top 10 finishes
If that underachieving then sign me up
I really do wonder where some of you were from 1997-2007. I mean, I have an idea, but I just can't imagine feeling upset/slighted by a run like the one laid out above.

4 years of AJ/Greg:
49-4
3 national championships
2 SEC championships
A Heisman winner

Yes, also great. Are we melting about not winning 3 of 4 national titles now?

Just further proves that defense wins championships

Underwhelming.

No. JaMarcus was just too young and inexperienced in 2004. Met expectations.

Say what you want about the guy, but he's one of if not the best CFB coach ever.

So you are saying Saban squandered the best offensive talent ever assembled at Bama?

You shoulda had Les if you think Sabans been underachieving. Probably would have killed yourself

It is worth discussion, in that the four years prior to the Jalen/Tua era (McCarron/Sims/Coker)
- 50-6 overall (28-4 SEC)
- 3 Sec titles
- 1 National Title
- 4 top ten finishes
- 50-6 overall (28-4 SEC)

- 1 National Title
- 4 top ten finishes

I actually think this might have been one of the best coaching jobs of his career. We lost two starters on the defensive side of the ball before a single game had been played. We then proceeded to lose two or three more starters on that side of the ball as the season progressed, forcing Saban to use four true freshmen in the front seven for almost the entirety of the season. There would be snaps on defense where more than half of the guys on the field were starting in high school just 12 months prior to that moment.
Then of course you had the injury to Tua Tagovailoa at the midway point of the season that was finally made season-ending three games later. We also lost our starting placekicker for the season as well as our second string RB who would have ended up being a major contributor. He went out for the year during the first or second fall scrimmage.
The fact that we ended up 11-2 is a testament to good coaching, even if it was frustrating more a good majority of the time.

In the years prior to Tua/Jalen we also had a much better defense

Your case would be much stronger if you had not lost both games against your only quality opponents. You had 4 tests in 12 months and you failed 3 of them ( being kind and giving you Michigan as quality cough cough). So you must understand the skepticism, right?

It’s an interesting question with a fair amount of beef behind it. His 2009 squad up to that point was the only team in history to play #1 and #2 back to back. And the QB to do beat both was god awful.

Jalen was not a great QB. AJ and Coker were both better.
Did Saban underachieve with Tua?
Well considering Tua only played one full season, and finished in a landslide blowout to Clemson, it’s possible.
I think the offensive coordinator got owned in that game.
But whatever. You have to keep moving forward.
The real question is what he’ll be able to do with 3 years of Bryce Young.
