I like 10+ win seasons and winning bowl games as much as the next person...
...but in the end this was a successful season because we beat the goons from Tuscaloosa.

Ridiculous! Loser mentality. We are a joke because of Gus.

Sorry, Gus needed to win that bowl game. It was a huge fail that he didn’t.
10-3 would have given me some justification for giving some support to Gus.
What a huge letdown that was. We played horrible in almost all facets of the game.

It’s debatable to call the season a successful season. From the the starting point of last offseason you could argue that it was successful. Gus didn’t lose his job nor the recruiting classes despite the chaos and rumors, and the magic number of 9 was met at the end of the next season. Also from the perspective of those struggling to field a good team, you could argue it was successful. I’m sure Miami or FSU or A&M would’ve taken it in a heartbeat.
However it wasn’t successful if you don’t like that Gus saved his job by doing what was needed, but not a millimeter more. The same things that dogged us last year still dog us today. Maybe if we said “9 wins is not the bar since you are the reason we are starting a TF QB” things would be less complicated in hindsight.

This is the kind of thinking that will always make us out to be little brothers.

This particular time we really needed that bowl win. For recruiting, confidence, and stature of the program. Gus knew we needed it, we knew we needed it. We failed miserably taking that L and it stains what could have been considered a very good season.

to be completely fair, that win did indeed keep Alabama out of the playoffs again.
But it wasn't Gus that beat Alabama, it was JHS.

This attitude is what's wrong with Auburn and why the administration gave a MORON a huge contract for finally beating UGA and Bama in the same season. There is a lot bigger prize to be won than the IB. WildWillie=Jay Jacobs

I’m clearly in the minority.
But given the choice of:
1. Season we had beating Bama
2. 10-3 and losing to Bama
...I would take #1.

It's not that you're in the minority, it's that you just have the mindset of a loser.

Gus had earned a lot of goodwill with the IB win from basically everybody. But the clunker vs Minn almost negated it because that 10-3 to 9-4 swing feels so huge aesthetically. As far as the term "hot seat" goes, in my view he is basically right back to where he was before this season started. The season was a net wash.

The only thing that truly kept Gus off of the hot seat this season was his contract, if we are being honest.
Next year, I don't see that being the case anymore. If he pulls his same mediocre bullshite, he will be gone.

You need to work a little more on what you want to say in your 272'd post.
This one is not what MOST Auburn people expect now.

The problem mostly now, and was evident so glaringly again in the bowl game. His offenses sputter and struggle for so many different reasons, but mostly bc of his scheme and eventually the play calling.
The Alabama game is one of those rivalry games that strange things happen. 2 TDs from the D. Alabama D not s strong as in the past. We still only threw for 173.
In the last 6 ranked teams we played we scored no more than 2 offensive TDs in a game except the Alabama game (3). That will not win you many games.
And in 2020..do you feel good that we can equal or top the 9 win season?
With a new OL, DL, and safeties and corners?
