Steele and the defense letting down in big games

Gave up 23 to LSU, 24 to Florida, 21 to UGA.
Even an offensive genius making over 6 million a year cannot be expected to overcome such poor defensive performances.
If Steele does not buckle up that D, Gus may not get an extension in spite of ringing up multiple TDs in big games.

Upvote.
On a serious note how realistic is it to keep our defensive staff in tact once Gus is kicked to the curb?

Gus should give Steele the proverbial pink slip for well, making him look bad.

It will be up to the new coach.
As it should be.

It's rare that a new coach keeps a staff in place. If and when Gus is fired, we are probably losing the good coaches that we have on defense. Leith and Jacobs put us in a very bad predicament with Gus' contract extension.
Hopefully, a new HC will keep the key components of the defense staff. Steele, Garner, and TWill. I fear that Steele will end up back across the state.

how realistic
It’s rare and unrealistic.
New head coaches want the entire program to be built around their vision and leadership. Retaining anyone from the old staff will keep the previous program lingering around. It’s a risk because the new staff will at first be mostly disliked by the players recruited by Gus.
A few eye rolls or even the slightest bad comments from anyone on Steele’s crew could sow dissension in the locker room toward the new coach. Further, the new coach may have a strategy that doesn’t align with how Steele coaches defense.
Coaches don’t want to risk any of that when they only have 3-4 years to prove themselves.

Aren’t they technically still employed by the AD? That goes without saying the incoming coach would want to choose his own staff, but if what’s in place is working why touch it. What LSU basically did is just get rid of Les Miles while trying to keep the same components in place. Les was the problem because he never let the offense open up. He was still stuck in the 3 yards & cloud of dust mentality.

We should just promote steele and ride it out

Kevin probably doesn’t want the responsibility.

I'm not entirely against that idea. Him and Garner are the most experienced coaches on this staff. He knows the players and what he has to work with next year. If he works out, a la Dabo or Coach O, great. If not, we are still in a better situation than we are now with Gus in charge.

Let's face it. We aren't in a position to buyout gus and then pay the money it will take to bring in the next guy too.

I wish Gus would just hire a real OC and turn everything over to that person. I don’t think he’s terrible at running the overall program. Players stay out of trouble. Team is pretty disciplined. We don’t have any distractions other than a piss poor offense.

Already tried that with Lindsay.

No, not someone to run his offense or concepts of it. A completely new guy that isn’t tied to him at all. Similar to what LSU did.
Because like it or not, Gus isn’t getting canned anytime soon.

If you think we’ll actually fire Gus then fine. I don’t believe it’s going to happen and think that may be the the way to make the best out of the situation that Leath put us in.

IMO it will take an old boy network hire which doesn't seem like the best decision. I could see a coach with ties to Steele wanting to keep him around, but I can't see making it a condition on hiring the new coach. IMO we'd be better off letting Steele run the team the rest of this season and give TWILL a chance to run the D.

He's 9-36 as a HC. We'd be better off sticking with Gus.

He didn't turn shite over to LIndsey. Lindsey has killed it at every stop. He didn't suddenly get stupid at Auburn.

Exactly, that was Gus’ offense. No one needs to kid themselves and act like ever turned anything over to an OC completely.
