But when Smart is posed a hypothetical—What would have happened if Fields had stayed? How would he have handled Fromm versus Fields: Round 2?
Still think this team had a higher ceiling with Fields at QB. In my mind, it's the same situation Dabo faced with Kelly Bryant and Trevor Lawrence. Obviously, the variables are different for our team compared to Clemson but after last year's LSU game we should've given the ball to Fields just to see what we could be with him.
We knew Fromm could beat all the less talented teams on our schedule but who knows what would've happened had we given the ball to Justin and he could've faced Alabama being "the man" for us after having nearly a full season under his belt.
I guess we'll see what Fields does this year but I've been consistent with my opinion that you can't win a natty in the modern era without an x-factor under center.
Don't get me wrong, I love Fromm but I think that little extra spice we need sometimes is a guy who can make something out of nothing. We don't have that with Fromm despite how good he can be sometimes.

Good article. Thanks for sharing.
This cements what many of us already assumed to be true:
I hope this season he’s able to shut down all the ones who said Fields was the better QB.
This cements what many of us already assumed to be true:
quote:His rhythm was thrown off by being taken out, and having to keep proving himself week after week probably weighed on him. Fields should have been RS’d and Fromm deserved more than he got.
In private, though, those closest to Jake could tell he wasn't entirely thrilled with the arrangement. He felt that leaving the game intermittently messed with his rhythm, and at a certain point, he thought he had played well enough to end the competition. "He was definitely frustrated at times," says Woerner, Fromm's fishing buddy, who's a tight end on the team. "He felt like he was doing all he could, and Justin would still get reps. [Jake] is a competitor. He wants to be The Guy."
I hope this season he’s able to shut down all the ones who said Fields was the better QB.

The back-up quarterback is always the most popular guy on the team with the fans because "what if". Of course, the "what actually happens" is why the guy is the back-up.

Could've been the greatest backup QB story in the history of college football. He took us to the greatest height we've seen since 1980. As a true freshman backup QB thrown into the starting job just 3 offensive plays into the season. And we didn't lose in the Championship because of him, but in spite of him.
Hope he stays for all four.

Alabama won NCs with Jake Coker, Greg McElroy, and A J McCarron as QB. Not much X factor for any of those.

We damn near won a Natty with Fromm under center. Fromm wasn't the reason we lost that game.

Ok but that's just Bama, what about the other teams that have beaten Bama?
Deshaun Watson
Cardale Jones
Money Manziel
Cam Newton
Nick Marshall
Stidham (he could run a lil)
Tim Tebow
Lawrence (not a burner but can buy time with his feet)
The data is pretty clear that teams with an x-factor give themselves a better chance to win. Fromm for all his gifts lacks that ability. That certainly doesn't mean he can't win but it makes it harder is all I'm saying.

I never said it was. The real reason we lost games in 2017 and 2018 is Kirby Smart interfering with the offense. Until the OC has complete control of the offense, Kirby will keep calling stupid trick plays and changing the offensive calls. Watch it happen in 2019 in a crucial game.

Not much with Trevor Lawrence, either. Just a good old fashioned gunslinger.
