Football talk: Alright aubies, it's your turn

From what I've read so far, it seems like you are loaded on the D-line and the big question marks are (1) Gus calling plays "for real" and (2) New Qb(s).
What are ya'lls expectations for the season, and what are you looking for?
Is Gus actually on the hot seat, or is that just talk?

1. I doubt Gus has to worry about being overruled by his OC so I'm not sure what this question is asking.
2. New QBs happen to everyone and are always a concern to everyone.

Will take 6 games for him to get to know what he has, lose games we have no business losing, and with his infinite wisdom call plays the entire viewing audience sees coming a mile away. Finish 8-4 at best, get an extension, and dipshits will be happy with it

If we can run the ball we're going to win 8 games. The other 4+ will depend on whether we have big nuts and win the close ones. If we can't run - long year to say the least.
Not really overly concerned with anyone on the schedule. Our starters are as good as anyone (considering we have UGA and UA at home - home field makes a difference).
I'm glad Gus is calling plays. He was a high school coach is now making millions because he could call plays. He was idiot to ever stop calling plays.
We are a big momentum team. If we can use the defense to jump on teams and the run game to wear them down then its going to be a fun year.
Only other thing - injuries could be crippling. Pray we stay healthy.
Final Comment: It's football, America's sport. Who cares what happens - enjoy the season hope for the best. Good weather in November for the big ones at home - everything will be alright.
Unlike some other teams we aren't triggered by not winning a Natty in the last 40yrs.....

Gus is always on the hot seat. Especially when asking younger fans. If he doesn't win the SEC West, people bitch. If he wins the SEC West but loses the SECCG, people bitch. It's what they do and it's disappointing.
As far as the administration and the majority of alumni, he's not going anywhere unless he loses the team and has a 5-7 type year. Which, with our schedule, could happen even if the team is pretty good.

You assume I'm a younger fan? I assume you're one of the dipshits that thinks 8-4 every year is acceptable.

I’m knocking on 50 years old and have been an Auburn fan long enough to remember when we had orange face masks and Doug Barfield as our head coach. One thing above all else about being a follower of the Auburn Tigers is that you never, and I mean never, go into any season with any expectation of what you think will happen.
Too many seasons I’ve seen them go in with everyone saying they’re going to run the table only to see them shite the bed. And too many seasons I’ve seen everyone in preseason say they’ll break even at best only to watch them have a championship season. So when it comes to my beloved Auburn Tigers, best thing to do is not worry about what things will look like at the end of the season, instead you just enjoy the ride.

Was I responding to you? You sure do make a bunch of emotional assumptions.

If the O-line has improved as they say they have, I think we have a chance to be in any game, but I worry it’s over hyped. 10-2 or 6-6 are equal possibilities and neither would shock me. Obviously QB play is the biggest X-factor, but there is a lot of experience team-wide to make this a good year

Sorry, lazy question on my part. In the past Gus could blame the OC to a degree. While most/everyone knew he was still the mastermind, there was a degree of separation. This year it seems like it's more on Gus (if that's possible).
Are you guys worried at all about the Oregon game? I think it's a good early matchup which (assuming you win) can put you on a good trajectory.

The QB's are young...Gus hasn't shown an ability to maximize the play of his own QB recruits.
The OL is ok, but not great.
The LB's will likely take a small step back, but most hope the DL improves, but we still don't have an honest speed rusher.
We play the preseason 2,3,6,8,11,13 teams...do the math.

If our OL gets enough push to run the ball, we may have something. Otherwise more of the same I think.

Feel you brother. I still have nightmares about the orange jerseys. There is just something about the way this year is unfolding. I am ordinarily a hardcore cynic, but I just believe Auburn is going to come out of the gate strong this year without the usual Gusgovenor holding these kids back. Hope I'm right.

Gus will fool all of you with the hurry up inside zone after a first down.
It’s science.
It’s science.

I will give you the correct answers to your question regardless of your trolling or my peers opinions. You can take these to the bank. I have insider information and I am much smarter than most of my peers
This is not a concern but a plus. Auburn has always done better with Gus actually calling the plays. Its what he does best
It is always a concern for every team. We dont know what either of these young kids will be like until they are in a live game, fighting for their lives and getting their arse kicked for a few quarters. My opinion? It will take either of them 5-6 games to get comfortable and we just dont have that unless our running game is greatly improved
Now I will give you more concerns that matter
3) - Injuries. We are having a lot of injuries to some key players already in fall practice. We are not extremely deep in some areas and can not sustain many guys getting injured and not playing.
4) Offensive line is just not that talented. Even though they have played together some and they are all seniors, our interior is bad. Tackles are OK but our center is just a big body out there passing the ball to the QB. A Gus offense only works when we have a running game. If that does not happen, the season will be a tough one
5) Schedule. You already know about this. 6 of the top 12 or so teams. There is no break in period
Would love to think we can win 10 games. Just not sure about that yet. I think a 9 win season with our schedule would be a decent season. Just too many good teams on our schedule and we will have some new pieces in there.
Everyyear. Its a dumb thing but if the wheels fall off, he is on the hot seat. If he can win 8 games, he is probably OK. I think firing him for winning 8 or even 7 games this year would be a bad decision but that is just me. I am not much on firing coaches just because the fan base is crying wolf. Thats what Auburn fans do. I call it the "Alabama effect". "Bama is gonna win another one and we aint. Fire the coach". It is the Auburn way

A team with top 15 talent can beat most any other team. The question is the "ifs and buts". The deeper the talent depth the fewer the if's and buts.
Bama, Clemson, UGA, have fewer ifs and buts than we do, however...
If we get better play out of our offensive line
If our brand new linebacker corps is as good as advertised
If we find a QB who can run the offemse the way Gus intended it to run.
If we can stay healthy at key positions....
We can compete for the West... But that is a lot of ifs

I don't get all the people saying this...
GUS DIDN'T STOP CALLING PLAYS BECAUSE HE WAS SUCCESSFUL
In 2014 we lost 5 with Gus calling plays. In 2015 we lost 6 with Gus calling plays. In 2016 we lost 5 with Gus calling plays.
THAT IS 16 LOSSES HIS LAST 3 YEARS OF CALLING PLAYS.
He didn't just decide to push out his protege and give up playcalling duties because we were winning...
The 2014 A&M game changed Gus. Gus lost his mojo in that game...and he hasn't been the same since.
For Gus to be successful officially calling plays again, he is going to have to find his mojo. It's something he hasn't seen since November 8th 2014.
And I say officially because while Chip may have called plays, he was calling from a handful of plays that Gus gave him ahead of time. All anyone needs to do to know this as FACT is watch Lindsey's offenses at Southern Miss and Arizona State. They very much resembled each other. And neither of those offenses looked anything like the offense we put on the field in 2017 and 2018. That was still the Gus Malzahn offense with a little more passing thrown in there.

Spot on, Gus has nobody to throw under the bus this year
