ESPN : College Position U

quote:

ESPN Stats & Information dug deep into the numbers, culled details on all-conference performers, All-Americans, NFL draft picks and stars from the pro ranks, and came up with a formula to determine the official rankings for the schools best at producing quarterbacks, receivers, tight ends, running backs, linemen, linebackers and defensive backs.

We limited the debate to the BCS and CFP era, including all players who appeared in games from 1998 through last season.

We weighted an All-America nod higher than an All-SEC selection. We had to come up with a metric to determine a player's performance at the next level that would function for all position groups, so we used average Approximate Value over the first four seasons (or fewer, if applicable) in the NFL. We needed a way to account for Notre Dame's lack of conference affiliation, and we used Brian Burke's NFL draft pick values chart to figure out how much more to value a first-round draft pick than a seventh-rounder.

And in the end, these programs are the best of the best at recruiting and developing elite talent and then shipping it off to stardom in the NFL.

Too much recent history in that. Auburn is getting way too much credit for Cam Newton. Really needs to be over a longer time period.

Cam, Jason Campbell and Stidham (plus Nick Mashall's CFB awards)

Based on everything they're saying (basically college plus pro) I find it hard to believe that from 98-18 we don't crack the top 10 at RB.

-Olandis Gary was alright in college but really showed up with the broncos
-Musa Smith, Kregg Lumpkin, and Thomas Brown were all darn good to borderline great college RBs
-Crowell had a fine freshman year then did much better in the pros
-Gurley, Chubb, and Michel were all elite college backs and are lookign the part in the pros
-Deandre Swift is an All American caliber back at present

Yea I'd love to see the breakout of the numbers, because I have no idea how the combination of college production + NFL stats didn't put Georgia in the top 5 at RB (and a few other positions too).

There was a comment at the end (I'm guessing because the author had the same reaction) that unscientifically answered the question :

quote:

One team surprisingly absent from the Running Back U top 10 is Georgia, which has had its share of talented runners over the years. In the past four years, the likes of Sony Michel, Nick Chubb and Todd Gurley have rumbled their way through Athens, but a lack of star power in the first half of the BCS era held the Dawgs back.

Yeah... Gotta question the approach if we don't even show up in a top ten for RB... I can understand being lower in the order due to early BCS era, but not even top ten seems suspect.

Shaun Alexander snuck in at the start of the BCS and LeRon McClain had almost 1,000 yards in year 2 of the NFL (this takes the first 5 years of the NFL into account). So that probably added a bit to the Saban era.

But yea - all hail Aaron Johns!

I think the biggest flaw in this seems to be there is an all or nothing approach. So, if you get whatever awards/honors they deemed worthy you get points. If you are really good but don't get those (say you have 2 in a backfield or whatever) you get nothing at all.

That's my guess as to what happens with Georgia. Todd Gurley is a prime example - he was awesome, but he had 1 season of 1,000 yards at Georgia. Obviously there were reasons why, but this wouldn't give him much in terms of points or whatever from college (he would get a ton from his first 5 years in the NFL, obviously). Sony Michel would probably fit this mold as well.

I'd like to see the WR lists

Bama was pretty much walking the desert until Julio, but he, Ridley, and 2 Biletnikoffs, plus several other NFL guys only gets you 9th?

Agree with the UGA fans, too

Yeah I figured Alexander aided Alabama's ranking significantly, even if the RBs that immediately followed him never really made an impact in the NFL.

Random stat but LeRon McClain has the longest TD run in Ravens history, which was also was the longest run in the history of Cowboys Stadium (82 yards).

Honestly 1998 seems like too far back to go in something like this, a huge chunk of those guys arent even in NFL.

Arkansas has had some pretty good RBs but we’ve had some really good TEs in the BCS era so surprised not to crack the top 10 there
