It absolutely was not the same. The Bowl Coalition and Bowl Alliance between 1992-1997 sought to force a national title game between the top ranked teams. Only the Rose Bowl held out. It was the precursor to the BCS.

Real college football National Championship games started in 92 with the Bowl Coalition. Not surprised you don't know your history though given your first post

Yes, 2006. Basketball went back to back in 2006 and 2007. Football won in 2006 and 2008. It was quite a run for Urban Meyer and Billy Donovan.
