Are the areas around the University of Alabama campus ghetto?

I always seem to get myself into this debate with LSU fans. They swear it’s ghetto just like it is near the LSU campus. But when I went there I didn’t see anything close to what we see in Baton Rouge around campus.
Try not to be biased. I love The LSU campus and the athletic facilities are obviously nice as can be. I’m talking about the areas a few blocks off campus. The rough spots. I also loved the UA campus and thought it was very nice and thought Tuscaloosa (only what I saw) was nice as well. Give me some non biased views

Not right off campus. The vast majority of “ghetto life” resides on the south side of i20 and west of hwy 69, near Stillman.

Everyone has bad spots. There used to be a lot more of them in Tuscaloosa, but not as much now. The bigger the city, the bigger the ghetto

Well the posters I argue with make it sound like the ghetto is literally blocks from campus the way it is in Baton Rouge.
I hope they know there’s a difference in “student ghettos” and actual ghettos.
Run down housing where broke college students live isn’t “ghetto” there’s nothing dangerous about that.

one side is the black warrior river w shops/restaurants, not ghetto
one side is downtown, not ghetto (come along way in 20 years though)
one side is McFarland/Alberta City, nice neighborhoods in the highlands before you get to Alberta City. Alberta City was really hit hard by the tornado
15th street is other direction, not very ghetto, apartments and fast food though
I think that's all pretty reasonable.

North of campus - Northport, strip malls and student apartments
East of campus - McFarland strip malls, then Alberta City downtown which is pretty ghetto
South of campus - Student apartments but once you get past the strip malls on 15th, Central Tuscaloosa is pretty ghetto
West of campus - The strip, then an empty wasteland
Everything within a few blocks is pretty decent

I spent a ton of time there years ago. Definitely not ghetto right around campus. Sure it is father away, but not right by campus

"Ghetto" might be a bit of an exaggeration. The UA campus is very nice. But the town of Tuscaloosa is definitely lacking in personality.... a bit rough around the edges. Certainly not a quaint college town feel like Athens, Oxford, Auburn, Columbia MO, etc.

Yeah. Those are towns built around a campus. Tuscaloosa was an industrial city even before the university began. It's a small city, nowhere near the degree of Nashville or something. But it's in that category, like Baton Rouge, a city where there is a university as opposed to a true college town

LSU is surrounded by ghetto.

The closest ghetto-like area by campus would be south and west of campus. Some very nice looking, yet public housing, is located about a mile or two south of Bryant Denny Stadium on 10th Avenue.
The public housing looks nice now, since it had been rebuilt since the 2011 tornado.
Otherwise, the nearest ghetto area is west of town or west of Lurleen Wallace Blvd / I 359. Alberta City to the East is pretty trashy, too, but since the aforementioned tornado went through, the area actually looks improved.

I find it funny OP is trying to troll Bama being in the ghetto considering there were shootings at a Mellow Mushroom and Taco Bell near LSU campus.

Hwy 69 toward Moundville has been going downhill crime wise since they Section 8'd all the tornado folks from Alberta City out there

LSU also has to be the largest campus in the world. It seems to go in for miles so it’s easier to be close to bad areas than a campus like Alabama where everything is within walking distance.
