If its a raccoon or possum, put a can of cat food in the trap.

Possums/raccoons/southern flying squirrels tend to be nocturnal, so if you hear noises early in the night it could be one of those leaving attic to forage. Eastern grey squirrels are diurnal, so you would likely hear them early morning.

Okay...let’s break it down.
Have you actually seen a squirrel or any signs of rodents in the attic? Leaves, pellets, chewed up shite? Insulation messed up? Or did you just assume it’s squirrels?

I would put my money on it being a possum. I've heard 'em make some very weird sounds in and around my house. Cat food in a trap is a good call. Possums are nasty little frickers.

Probably just the spirits of the Lake Oconee murder victims you conjured. Theyre trying to figure out if you were mocking them, or if you actually want to help them. Red rum, Red rum. Nighty night.

Go buy you a cheap trail camera and put into the attic. Get one with night mode and set it up. You should be able to check in the morning to see what varmint you have in there. Plus it might give you and indication of where they are coming in and leaving from.

Be thankful it's only squirrels.
I've caught at least 3 large grey rat snakes in my house over the years, and 1 pretty small one. One of them was in my wife's china cabinet. I just caught it by the tail like Steve Irwin...God rest his soul...and pulled it out. No aggressiveness or anything. Just released it in the woods.
Wherever you find rodents, you'll find these snakes. And they will find a way in, no matter what. Moth balls will stop that, but the scent tends to permeate the house.

I toss moth balls around the house, barn, and sheds every spring. Keeps the rattlesnakes and copperheads away from the buildings. I usually kill 3 or 4 rattlers and a copperhead or 2 around the farm every year.

Are you sure that the snakes aren't mistaking moth balls for eggs?

Nah. They flick their tongues on them to see what it is, because snakes smell with their tongues, and that drives them away.

Update:
Which animal makes the sound of a baby crying in your attic?

FYI, that snake repellent you buy at the hardware store for $15.00 is the same chemical of moth balls you buy at Walmart for $3.99.
