Were we getting beat up front or were they over committing guys daring us to throw over the top?

Saban said they had an extra guy in the box most of the game, but we still didn't get much push.

I thought we got no push for the majority of the game. Also felt at times that they were loading up to stop the run and guessed right.

We seem to not be able to figure out that when teams load the box you cant continue to run counter.
Plus also pull a linemen when the box is loaded.
I think there are times when we need to just put a hat on a hat straight ahead blocking.
Our backs like 34 has the vision to find his crease and 8 is a slasher with lower power plus 22 breaks arm tackles.

Damien Harris was visibly frustrated at times. There was just nothing there.

Bingo.

The playcalling on runs was too similar and predictable. Basically slow developing runs where you try to make them think you are passing, not as delayed as draws but close enough to give the D a lot of time to react.
We need to run some jet sweeps, WR reverses, halfbacks and TEs in motion type stuff and keep the ball moving all over the field. Kiffin was great at that, especially in the first two seasons. Just any type of plays that spread the field with the running game and that'll take a lot more pressure off of Tua.

For as much shite as Kiffin got for his horizontal offense of jet sweeps and wr screens, all the sideline to sideline action would wear down the defense and made opponents very vulnerable to a more traditional running attack later in the game. I don’t want to see that level now but the occasional wrinkle to give defenses one more thing to worry about is a good thing.

The deal with the running game is we have the best QB in the country and haven't had to use it much.

Nah, we were getting stonewalled at the LOS when we tried to run the football on Saturday. It happened, it wasn't just because we didn't run any.

It'd be nice to see more runs where the backs are moving towards the line when they get the ball more. Seems like there was a lot more handoffs where the back was essentially stationary or moving laterally.

We have 2 road graders at tackle on the OL. That's not the problem. The problem is we insist on trying to run through the A gaps when our guards are our weakest link in the OL and the defense is overloading the A gap. Recipe for disaster. When we stretched the plays off tackle, we started gashing them with the run.

Extra man in the box didn't help but we seemed content to run it up between the tackles. We ran an rpo with Damien following pulling guards toward the TE and Tua pulled and tried to throw it on a hitch or slant toward the trips receivers. Damien wouldn't have been touched for 40+ yards.

Currently rewatching the game as I type this. Observations so far...
Offense:
No push on OL. Leatherwood and Piersbacher jumping out on tape with some missed assignments and allowing penetration. Not the mauling type OL we are used to. Run blocking schemes may have us a step slow? No clue.
Tua’s worst throws look like Jalen’s average throws.
Defense:
Raekwon Davis is not nearly as effective 1v1 as I had hoped. He had a few nice moves later in game but Q Williams and Buggs noticeably better than him IMO. 89 Ray and 95 Dwight deserve more reps.
Diggs got picked on early. Secondary adjusted nicely tho.
Mond has wheels. Cannot lose him or its 6.
Extremely lucky with Moses not being injured seriously on that end zone play. Looked terrible.
Punting is not going to cut it. Skylar DeShank.
You know we have struggled at K when the crowd reacts as if we scored a TD w the made FG at end of 1st half.

We need to be more creative in the run game. Last season vs Miss St we started to run outside in the 4th quarter and gashed them. That one scoring drive vs Auburn right out of the 2nd half was attributed to mostly outside runs. Then we just stop trying to stretch the edge. Too many runs inside this past Saturday.

I’m hoping this isn’t a case where we miss Burton Burns. First year since Saban arrived where he was wasn’t coaching our backs.
That might not explain OL issues or playcalling, but it could be an additional factor.

Play calling was good, people need to get used to the fact that running downhill with this QB and WR's isn't priority. Good run stopping front 7's out there and crappy DB's. Shred the secondary. OL did their job. No QB Sacks.

That's stupid, and sounds like a load of shite you just made up to me. If we can't run the ball between the tackles at all, someone like LSU or Auburn is going to come up with a way to generate constant pressure on Tua or cover our WRs and we're in trouble. There is no way Saban is going to deprioritize the run game just because we don't have to lean on it the way we have in the past.

I think in the past, we just punched the other team in the mouth until they couldn't take it anymore and we started gashing them. The repetition was good for our linemen and bad for the other team. With this passing game, I think we just haven't done that. I'll bet Saban makes them practice that in next Saturday's game.
