From what I’ve been told this will probably stick. Surtain to Corner, Diggs to Star. But we will see if there is a drastic difference.

Think he just needs to be thrown in the fire. You can tell he is going to be a good one. Very fluid . Better get ready for some vertical routes though

I'm assuming that the stafff surmises that we are better with Surtain on the field, and corner is easier mentally than Star, ergo the player with more grasp of the defense moves to Star - Diggs.

I'm not certain, but I would have to guess this has to do with Shy not getting off his blocks to make tackles.

Our DB's haven't been doing as good of a job as years past of getting off blocks to make tackles, but I've noticed Shy more so than others really struggling from a physical standpoint to shed blockers.

As much as coaches and players hyped up Shy the last year or 2, crazy to think he's kinda the forgotten DB in an inexperienced group.

Doesn't bode well for him...

Nice glad they got it out. I didn’t even see it. More of my point is I think this will stick.

Many people erroneously think that the Nickel Back, "Star" in Bama terminology, is the 3rd best corner. This is simply not true. Your Star is more of a Swiss Army knife DB - someone who can play man on an island, line up in the box and play psuedo-LB, and roam like a safety - and do these these on a play-in-play-out basis.

I'm guessing that Diggs is the best (or at least excellent) at both Corner and Star, but that Surtain is a better corner than Carter is a Star. Making this change simply gets the best 5 on the field in Nickle. I would expect Diggs to play Corner if we line up in base.

However, I think this is great news for our secondary and defense as a whole, as I know Carter will be an excellent backup and likely the Dime safety (unless Wright continues to impress).

I said in the game thread, that towards the end of the season, Surtain would be a lockdown corner. That might be a little hyperbole

I think he's better suited at corner than Diggs. Nothing against Diggs I just believe he has that much talent

Interesting. Before the opener I called Diggs being replaced by Surtain, and I got downvoted to hell for it

He's not really being replaced though. Star in our defense is a starter. They are just swapping positions.

He's being replaced at CB, and will no longer be on the field for every snap

According to Al.com
quote:

Presumably in the base formation, Diggs would be at corner along with Saivion Smith.

That's not what is being reported at all.

Diggs will still be the base corner. In nickel, he will slide over to Star and Surtain will come in at corner.

It's about getting the best unit out on the field. When the defense goes back to base formation Trevon will be the starting CB opposite Savion. I see it as Shyheim getting replaced...not Trevon.

I will go you one better in that Diggs should be a receiver where he is more natural. The guy has worked hard to try and be something that might not be his best spot on the field.
