Why did UT not hire Cutcliffe?

You have accused Ole Miss of a stupid move in firing Cutcliffe years ago but in all of the coaching changes since, and you've had many, you never seriously considered hiring Cutcliffe. Why is that?

He like everyone else with a pulse turned them down.

They did. He said he would rather coach at Duke

UT could lure him if they were serious. How many times did Saban turn down Alabama?

UT was going to hire Cutcliffe back after Kiffin bolted. He would have taken the job, but Mike Hamilton refused to let him bring his entire Duke staff with him. He wanted him to keep some of Kiffin's staff. My inlaws are UT people so I know some of the backstory there. UT's admin couldnt undermine the football program more if they tried the last 10-15 years.

Weren't they close to hiring him after Lane left but they couldn't agree on something?

So they wanted to hire the guy but did not want him to pick his own assistants? That's a recipe for disaster.

Yep. You couldnt make up some of the idiotic crap that admin has done.

I believe he has had health issues that make a lower key job like Duke better for him. Just speculating here.

It’s Tennessee are you suprised they would do that?

The crazy thing is it looks like the only Kiffin assistants who were still there in 2010 were Chaney and Lance Thompson

That choaching search was probably the worst one I've ever seen. They got hyped about 1 guy, released his name, then he would turn them down...and it happened again, and again, and again...then they actually hired Schiano, only to fire him the next day...eventually it was just like.

Cutcliffe wanted no part of the grease fire that is UT football.

I second that!

Phil wants Tennessee to suck so his legend grows.

No idea if this is true, or not, but it wouldn't surprise me. You hear this every year when schools try to hire a coach, but it doesn't happen.
But why? It seems crazy that you would hire a coach and then tell him who he has to put on his staff. If you don't trust his judgment in assembling a staff, why would you want to hire him to begin with?
It feels like these are political moves by administrators in athletic departments trying to demonstrate how much power they have. It makes it incredibly frustrating for the fans.

That can't be good for Zero's ego.

he is long in the tooth and has had some health issues in the past few years. My guess he was asked for his opinions but thy were going young blood.

1.) Cucliffe has a bad ticker and he’s in his late 60’s (maybe early 70’s at this point).
2.) Cutcliffe is adored at Duke, and has the support and backing of Coach K. That can’t be underestimated.
3.) Expectations are low.
Take those 3 things, add them together, and it’s a job he’d be foolish to leave.
