So they wanted to hire the guy but did not want him to pick his own assistants? That's a recipe for disaster.

Almost like when the Admin tells an existing coach to make a list of how to improve the program by which assistants to hire and fire.

Cutcliffe would be crazy to walk away from a lifetime contract at Duke to be fired in a few years at Tennessee. Who cares if he doesn't make much at Duke, he has a steady job with low expectations and is making bowl games.

I believe he has had health issues that make a lower key job like Duke better for him. Just speculating here.

That is correct and he's not the best recruiter when it comes to the SEC and didn't have the energy at the time either to coach at UT.....He can win 6 games at Duke and be a hero and stay there as long as he wants.

Because Duke is a superior program to Tennessee.

UT was going to hire Cutcliffe back after Kiffin bolted. He would have taken the job, but Mike Hamilton refused to let him bring his entire Duke staff with him. He wanted him to keep some of Kiffin's staff. My inlaws are UT people so I know some of the backstory there. UT's admin couldnt undermine the football program more if they tried the last 10-15 years.
