quote:

Ohio State has suspended coach Urban Meyer through Sept. 2 without pay. Meyer can rejoin the program after Sept. 2, but will not be allowed to coach in the team's first three games.

Additionally, OSU athletic director Gene Smith has also been suspended without pay from Aug. 31 until Sept. 16.

The moves come after a two-week investigation into allegations that Meyer and others mishandled domestic assault accusations made against former assistant coach Zach Smith.

"Although neither Urban Meyer nor Gene Smith condoned or covered up the alleged domestic abuse by Zach Smith, they failed to take sufficient management action relating to Zach Smith's misconduct and retained an Assistant Coach who was not performing as an appropriate role model for OSU student-athletes," the school said in a statement. "Permitting such misconduct to continue is not consistent with the values of the University and reflects poorly on Coach Meyer, Athletic Director Smith, and the University. Their handling of this matter did not exhibit the kind of leadership and high standards that we expect of our Athletic Director, Head Coach, Assistant Coaches and all on the football staff."

Meyer will miss the fifth-ranked Buckeyes' games against Oregon State, Rutgers and No. 16 TCU.

More than 60,000 emails and 10,000 text messages were reviewed in addition to media reports, police reports, court filings, employee contracts and relevant OSU rules and policies.

Ohio State placed Meyer on paid administrative leave Aug. 1, shortly after Courtney Smith, Zach Smith's ex-wife, said in an interview with Stadium that she believed Meyer and others at the football program knew that her ex-husband was abusing her in 2015 and failed to do anything to stop it. Meyer fired Zach Smith on July 23 after a pattern of past allegations of abuse came to light in a report by college football reporter Brett McMurphy.

Meyer initially said he was previously unaware of any domestic issues between the Smiths that occurred during the time that Zach Smith was a coach at Ohio State. He backtracked shortly after being placed on leave, saying instead that he misspoke when first answering questions about Smith and that he followed proper protocol in reporting the incident in 2015.

Meyer has a 73-8 record in seven years at Ohio State and won the national championship with the Buckeyes following the 2014 season.

He had a 65-15 record at Florida and won two national championships there, following the 2006 season and the 2008 season. His overall record in 17 years at Bowling Green, Utah, Florida and Ohio State is 177-31.

Meyer has a salary of $7.6 million for the 2018 season and is under contract through 2022.

Yeah, he skates. Just like I figured he would.

And during the press conference, no one apologized to the woman that was abused; or to any women that he allowed a woman beater to stay on his staff.

That's a good role model for all the young men he mentors.

Ehhh I think they really didn't have anything on him, anyway. It was a complicated situation, not nearly as cut and dried as the original story seemed to make it.

As a fan of a major college team, I'm glad they didn't fire him. I don't want some disgruntled ex-wife of a coach or something dragging up junk from their marriage and trying to hang Coach Saban with it.

Maybe I'm paranoid but I think Saban and Alabama have the biggest target on their backs right now. This stuff with A&M and the OSU stuff, all make me uncomfortable.

Ohio State is good for a scandal every few years. They're an outlaw program and they're fine with that.

Not sure where this info comes from. OSU is like a very few they self subsidize their athletics from their athletic revenue but it is not a money maker for the university. OSU in 2016 athletic expenditures were 166m and revenue 170m. So the athletic program made 4m. Yes maybe football is the largest revenue within the athletic department but not even close for the university over all. Last years revenue outside of athletics was over 7 billion. 170 million is a drop in the bucket. Just saying

Why does Football have to pay for everything else?

I don't like how University's take a socialist route when dealing with athletics.

They are ranked number 2 in total income.. Texas number 1 and Bama 3rd. Looks like big money to me. Don’t matter how they spin it off. Seems like football carries that load too., I get that money comes from other places for the school. But football Carries the bill for all athletics to break even. It also gets those donors to open up a lot more.

This one breaks down the spending.. It’s all about write offs. Amazing how many teams are in the red according to their report.

This was a joke from the word "GO!" I'm actually quite surprised that the AD didn't fall on the sword though. This 3 game suspension really isn't 3 games to be honest. He can't have contact with the team until Sept 2nd I believe, so he does miss 1 game against the worst Power 5 program in college football. He is then allowed to practice and meet with the team BUT can't coach in the next 2 games. Meanwhile, AD Gene Smith has to stand in the corner for the next 17 days!!!
tOSU is such a JOKE!!!

LINK ]News conference shows Urban Meyer still doesn't get it (ESPN)

quote:

Ohio State coach Urban Meyer is now 0-2 in news conferences, and that might be the only record that counts.

The first time, at Big Ten media days, he lied.

The second time?

Meyer stood in front of a room full of reporters and television cameras Wednesday night, taking center stage in what was the biggest story in sports, and apologized more to "Buckeye Nation" than he did to Courtney Smith.

It's not just what Meyer said or the adolescent, bumbling way in which he delivered it. It's what he didn't say -- starting with her name.

Courtney Smith, the woman who sent Meyer's wife text messages of bruises she said she suffered at the hands of her ex-husband, Zach Smith, an Ohio State assistant coach. Courtney Smith, who filed an order of protection against Zach Smith on July 20. Courtney Smith -- not Meyer, who only played the victim on TV.

Meyer was suspended for three games. Courtney Smith says she suffered through years of domestic disputes that are documented in police reports. According to the OSU Summary of Findings, Meyer "knew of Courtney Smith's domestic violence complaints against Zach Smith through his knowledge of the 2015-2016 law enforcement investigation."

Meyer said he was not aware of his wife's text messages at the time. As a wife, I don't believe this for one second. The investigators didn't either: "Given the closeness of their relationship and Shelley's concerns, we believe it is likely that Shelley and Urban Meyer had at least some communication about these allegations in late 2015 and were concerned about them, although both had doubts about the credibility of Courtney's claims ..."

Instead of acknowledging Courtney Smith, Meyer spoke without sincere emotion, seemingly without genuine remorse about anything. He sped through a prepared statement like a teenager being forced to apologize to his little brother.

Meyer had an opportunity on Wednesday night to redeem himself, to show that his "core value" of "TREAT WOMEN WITH RESPECT" is more than just capital letters on a wall in a locker room. Instead, when asked what he had to say to Courtney Smith, Meyer answered: "Well, I have a message for everyone involved in this: I'm sorry that we're in this situation, and, I'm just sorry we're in this situation."

I'm sorry for Courtney Smith. I'm sorry that Meyer and his boss, athletic director Gene Smith, have lost all perspective on the world that is outside of Buckeye Nation.

Gene Smith, a member of the College Football Playoff selection committee, said the "greatest pain" he feels is for the people he serves every day.

"The 565 employees I go to work with every day, the thousand-plus student-athletes we work with every day," he said, "and, of course, all of Buckeye Nation and this institution."

Buckeye Nation. The loyal fans who pay for season tickets. The boosters who write the checks. The parents and players and recruits who would give anything to be a part of it all.

Not Courtney Smith, who can't seem to escape it.

The three-game suspension can and will be debated, but what was painfully clear Wednesday night was that Meyer still doesn't understand the weight of what has been alleged against him.

When asked whether he thought he should have been suspended, Meyer's response gave the impression that he had pressed a button to spit out the answer: "I trust and support our president." Twice.

Ohio State will start its season against Oregon State, Rutgers and TCU. There's a very good chance that even with Meyer suspended, the Buckeyes will go 3-0 in those games.

Meyer, though, is 0-2 -- a record in which even Buckeye Nation should be disappointed.
