Recruiting question of the day: Debunking myth of recruits being scared to play for Tide
Tua Tagovailoa signed with Bama knowing he'd have to challenge Jalen Hurts for the QB job.

Alabama finished 7th in the recruiting rankings in the 2018 class, but expect the Crimson Tide to be back on top in 2019. SEC Country’s Chris Kirschner will answer the Recruiting Question of the Day each weekday. You can ask him your questions on Twitter or Facebook. Find our previous questions and answers here.
Do you think a lot of recruits are afraid of the challenge to play at Alabama?
From @lpmitchellrtr
This was a popular question I received after National Signing Day earlier this month. Alabama finished seventh in the recruiting rankings for the Class of 2018, its lowest ranking since 2007. The Tide also snapped their streak of having the nation’s No. 1 recruiting class for seven straight years.
I think a lot of Alabama fans got accustomed to having the nation’s top class and wondered why the Tide dropped off in 2018. I spoke about this topic already, and if you missed it, you can read it here.
I also don’t think the majority of recruits are afraid of the challenge to play at Alabama. The Tide have had a loaded roster since these recruits were in elementary school. Nothing has changed there. Tua Tagovailoa chose a school 4,000 miles away from home knowing he had to compete with the reigning SEC Offensive Player of the Year, Jalen Hurts. Alex Leatherwood chose Alabama knowing Jonah Williams was one of the best freshmen offensive linemen in the country. We can keep throwing out examples.
But the truth of the matter is, yes, some recruits are scared off by the team’s depth chart. And I’m not sure if you want those players on your team anyway. A lot of those guys want to be handed a starting job instead of actually working for one. Alabama doesn’t want those players. It wants players who are going to work hard in practice and earn their playing time.

Brooks film is nasty. Reminds me of foster. Heat seeking missile all over the field. Saw him almost knock himself out on one play jus like foster. Dude brings it.

I guess Alabama must have had trouble recruiting Florida, when he was in Tallahassee.
You act like he poses no threat, but he waltzed in 30 miles away from Tuscaloosa and took the most athletic quarterback ever to come from Alabama home with him.

He’s no more of a threat than he was at Florida State. The head to head battles just shift from Florida to Texas. The real problem is Texas having a recruiting resurgence under Herman.

I was joking about Brooks being from Texas.

He got Winston because our baseball program and facilities were pitiful. Also, it didn't hurt that Saban told him that he was there for football first while Jimbo let him do as he pleased.

Not that upset that that dude isn’t affiliated with our program.

Me either. Now.
But in 2012, it was a pretty big blow for a superstar who lived in Bessemer to spurn the Tide. Especially at a position where we haven't had a NFL-starter caliber player in over 50 years.

They will be fine, but sucks for Fla. St. that their only recent title is affiliated with that dude (who continues to embarrass) and a coach who left them for a less prestigious program.

Brodie Croyle and Greg McElroy were recent NFL starting QBs for Alabama at that point in 2012.
Richard Todd started 94 games for the Jets from 1976-1983.
And for that matter, Namath and Stabler fall inside your 50 year window at that point in 2012.

That’s not really a super talented group of cheerleaders. Probably the worst group of the Saban era. Maybe they need recruiting help as well.

True. I was exaggerating by about four years.
Richard Todd was the one exception, but he was only the full time starter for about four seasons in his NFL career.
Imagine how good we could be under Saban if we ever had a legit NFL guy at the position. Here's hoping Tua becomes the first of many.

ETA - It looks like AJ will get a shot at a starting job now. I hope it's somewhere other than Cleveland.

Brodie was a great passing QB. Maybe the best Bama has ever had...he was just behind the worst O lines Bama has ever trotted out. (Cough...Chris Capps...cough)
Tragically enough...the same fate awaited him in Kansas City. KC was known for good OL play up until the season before Brodie arrived. Then that great OL started getting injured and old. The guys they brought in for replacements were just too green to give Brodie much of a chance, and the runing game didn’t help take the pressure off.
If Croyle would have had the same situation as AJ has - in college AND NFL - he would have had shot at a Heisman in 2005 and would have had a better chance for an NFL career.
People like to shite on Brodie, but he was one of the top 50 (30 something I believe) HS recruits - any position - all time according to 247...and he chose Bama when it was a train full of burning dumpsters, crashing into another train full of coaches named Mike being driven by a coach named Dennis Feancione that destroyed a local business named Aerty’s Angels.
Show some respect.
