Other important prospects headed to Tuscaloosa this weekend

Several elite recruits in the 2019 and 2020 classes announced on Twitter that they’ll visit Alabama this weekend for the Tide’s junior day. Here are the recruits expected to attend the event:

4-star safety Cortez Andrews — Andrews was close to committing to Alabama at one point. It’s unclear where he stands on the defensive back board now that Derrick Ansley left for the Oakland Raiders.

4-star safety Trikweze Bridges — Bridges had a verbal offer from Ansley, but the in-state prospect will likely need to camp this summer to receive a committable offer.

3-star cornerback DJ James — Another in-state prospect. James doesn’t have an offer from the Tide just yet.

Other prospects who have confirmed will be in attendance are:
5-star tackle commit Pierce Quick,
4-star linebacker commit King Mwikuta,
4-star defensive end Nathan Pickering,
4-star cornerback Christian Williams,
4-star safety Noa Pola-Gates and
4-star tackle Xavier Truss.

SEC Country will have a full preview of the visitors this Friday.

I think both Texas and A&M are on a we are just as good as Bama/SEC thing going on. Like the kid at the top of this page. Never heard of him honestly but somehow we are in the top three.

Arjei Henderson's 247 page shows he was once committed to Oklahoma, then Oregon, and has never visted Bama. Yet he tweeted he'll commit to one of his new top-3 (ATM, Bama, OK) in April.

He seems unpredictable, but that's no reason to assume all Texas recruits are flaky or will string us along until the end and then land in TX or OK.

Bobby Brown (immature) did, Verson Jackson somewhat did, but Jaylen Waddle didn't. If a commit doesn't sign in the early period, that pretty much tells you he's not truly committed.

ATM and Texas have promising new coaches, but will they be serious contenders for any titles real soon? And will Oklahoma keep it rolling this season with their new and very young HC? UGA scored 56 on OU, but only 23 on us.

Jimbo is going to be a nightmare to recruit against in Texas. The good news is he will keep some from going to LSU.

I guess Alabama must have had trouble recruiting Florida, when he was in Tallahassee.

We may have a struggle with a few Texas kids here and there but opens the door perhaps for more in FL.

We should only fight the long distance recruiting battles we can win. The recruit and his parents should be "pre-qualified" diligently as to whether they are truly "down" with him going to a school that's a long distance from home. If you can't get their sincere promises about that up front, it's most likely a waste of time to recruit him.

Tide set to host grad transfer QB (BamaOnLine)

quote:

Alabama will host East Carolina grad transfer quarterback Gardner Minshew this weekend, his father confirmed to BamaOnLine. AL.com's Matt Zenitz first reported the visit.

A player that would be immediately eligible as a graduate transfer, Minshew withdrew from ECU to “devote his full attention to a family matter in his home state of Mississippi,” Pirates head coach Scottie Montgomery announced last month per Stephen Igoe.

Minshew was named ECU’s starter entering spring drills. The Brandon, Miss. native started five of 10 games during the 2017 season, leading East Carolina in completions (174), attempts (304), passing yards (2,140) and passing touchdowns (16) as a junior. He established ECU and AAC single-game records with a 52-of-68, 463-yard performance at Houston on Nov. 4.

After leading Northwest Mississippi Community College to the 2015 NJCAA national title, he transferred to ECU and played in seven games during the 2016 campaign as a sophomore.

Should he indeed transfer to UA, Minshew would give Alabama four scholarship quarterbacks -- something Saban has repeatedly said he desires. The Tide returns soon-to-be junior Jalen Hurts, sophomore Tua Tagovailoa and redshirt freshman Mac Jones.

Grad transfer QB set to visit Alabama (al.com)

Gardner Minshew threw for 2,140 yards and 16 TDs as a junior at East Carolina last season.
quote:

Alabama may be close to landing the graduate transfer quarterback it's been pursuing. Gardner Minshew is set to visit Alabama this weekend, AL.com has learned. As has been the case for weeks, the Crimson Tide continues to look like the favorite to land the Brandon, Mississippi native.

Minshew left East Carolina in late January despite being named the team's No. 1 quarterback entering the spring, citing a family situation in Mississippi and a desire to play his final college season closer to home.

The 6-foot-2, 215-pound Minshew played in 10 games as a junior at East Carolina last season, started five and threw for 2,140 yards and 16 touchdowns with seven interceptions. He threw for 1,486 yards and 10 touchdowns over the team's final four games.

While Alabama has Jalen Hurts, Tua Tagovailoa and Mac Jones, the Tide has wanted to add another quarterback, especially because of the possibility that Hurts or Tagovailoa could transfer before the season depending on where things stand in the team's quarterback competition.

The last sentence should include Mac as a possible transfer instead of Tua.

East Carolina grad transfer QB Gardner Minshew visiting Alabama this weekend

Gardner Minshew is Bama's top 2018 QB target.
quote:

Alabama’s hunt for a quarterback in the 2018 recruiting cycle may be in its final days. East Carolina graduate transfer quarterback Gardner Minshew told SEC Country that he is visiting Tuscaloosa this Friday. AL.com’s Matt Zenitz was first to report Minshew’s visit.

Minshew, who has one year of eligibility left and the potential for a redshirt year,  recently told SEC Country that he’s leaning toward the Tide. “Alabama 100 percent leads,” Minshew said. “They were the first ones to hit me up. There haven’t been many schools to hit me up. I told the [Alabama] coaches that it was a situation that was favorable for me. I’m in. They told me they’re in, so I’m in on them. That’s where I’m at right now.”

Minshew threw for 2,140 yards, 16 touchdowns with 7 interceptions this past season for the Pirates. He was was expected to be ECU’s No. 1 quarterback this spring, but transferred from the program in late January because of an emergency family situation. He sent his release out to schools “within driving distance” from his home in Brandon, Miss. Schools in Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee received his release.

Alabama was one of the first schools to reach out to Minshew. He said he initially spoke to offensive coordinator Mike Locksley, but his primary communication has been with quarterbacks coach Dan Enos. He’s also had one phone conversation with Saban.

The path to immediate playing time in Tuscaloosa is going to be quite difficult for Minshew with Jalen Hurts and Tua Tagovailoa on the roster, but Alabama is an appealing option for him because it’s only about a 2 1/2-hour drive from his family’s home in Brandon, Miss., and that is priority No. 1 to Minshew right now.

“As far as getting on the field right away [at Alabama], it’s going to be a grind,” Minshew said. “They told me that I can come in and compete. That’s all I ask for. I know where I’m coming in at. They have two really, really, really good young guys. I can’t say enough about them, their leadership and maturity. I just hope to bring in work ethic, leadership and more maturity. I want to help out that room any way I can.”

5 star DT

Alabama football has to load up with defensive linemen in the ’19 class. Tua may be a big help landing fellow Hawaiian, 5-Star DT, Faatui Tuitele.
Alabama football needs to sign a minimum of four defensive linemen in the 2019 recruiting class. So far, the Tide has issued 13 offers for defensive tackles. At this point, the highest priority among those offers is 5-Star, Ishmael Sopsher from Amite, LA. Sopsher is the No. 1 ranked DT in the 2019 signing class.

In addition to Sopsher, Alabama football’s offers have gone to 10, 4-Star DT’s and two 3-Stars. According to 247Sports, among the 4-Stars are five of the Top Ten rated defensive tackles in the 2019 class.

There is another 5-Star prospect high on the Alabama football big board. He is Faatui Tuitele, who played with Tua Tagovailoa at St. Loius High Scholl in Hawaii before Tua moved to Tuscaloosa. Tuitele is in frequent communication with new Crimson Tide defensive coordinator, Tosh Lupoi. The Tide has not extended an offer yet but one will probably quickly follow Tuitele’s scheduled April visit to Tuscaloosa.

Tuitele has no shortage of offers from top programs. He already has over 30 offers with USC and Oregon tabbed by most recruiting experts as his leaders. Other top programs working hard to rein in Tuitele are UCLA, Washington, Clemson, FSU, Georgia, Tennessee, Notre Dame, Stanford, Penn State and Ohio State.

Tuitele told Chris Kirchner,

There’s no distance that I’ll hold myself to. Nothing will limit which college I want to go to. Location doesn’t play any factor in my choice in the end. My family wants me to choose the school that I am most comfortable at.
Faatui and Tua have a family connection
Besides being a former teammate of Tua, Faatui is also a distant cousin. Speaking of Tua and his family, Tuitele said,

He (Tua) has a great family. Uncle Galu and Auntie Diane (Tagovailoa’s parents) are great people and back him up with everything. We are raised to put God first with everything. That’s what Tua did. He represented our culture, our people and the island so well. It was awesome to see.
Bama Online spoke with Tuitele about the possibility of playing for the Crimson Tide.

The program speaks for itself, especially this past year with Alabama winning the championship, especially with Tua playing, it motivated me to want to get involved with the Alabama program.
Alabama football has some strong advantages is signing Tuitele. Tosh Lupoi is a great recruiter. Tuitele’s connection with Tua and the positive experience the Tagovailoa family have enjoyed in relocating to Alabama is another big plus. In addition, arguably the best defensive line position coach in college football, new Tide hire Craig Kuligowski is another advantage. Ten months away from the next early signing period, there are no recruits 100 percent locked-in to a school. Still, Alabama football looks to be in a great position for Tuitele.

4-star freshman 'a little different' than Alabama's other receivers (al.com)

Jaylen Waddle (17) catches a pass during the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, January 6, 2018.
quote:

As Jaylen Waddle's high school coach talked about him at the school's National Signing Day ceremony, he brought up something a prominent college coach once told him about Alabama's newest wide receiver.

"There's a Division I coach at a top-10 school in the country that said he has never seen a high school wide receiver as dynamic as you are," Waddle's high school coach, Steve Leisz, said during that ceremony. "And he's been around a while."

If you watch a Waddle highlight tape, it will take less than a minute to understand that this 5-foot-10, 175-pound Bellaire, Texas native has rare speed and playmaking ability.

He was one of Alabama's top wide receiver targets for this year's recruiting class, maybe even the top one. And, even though the Crimson Tide returns three wide receivers that contributed a lot as freshmen last season, Waddle will be in the mix to play a lot as a true freshman.

"We had him in a camp last summer and we've recruited him for a long time," Alabama coach Nick Saban said. "He's got great quickness and change of direction and run after catch (ability). Really an outstanding overall receiver, but would work really well for us in the slot. Has really good run after catch speed, sweep-type of ability. Maybe a little different than some of the guys we have right now, which is a really good thing."

Waddle, the fifth-best wide receiver and 39th-best overall prospect in this year's recruiting class according to the 247Sports Composite rankings, was the final player to sign with the Tide on National Signing Day.

Waddle picking Alabama over Texas A&M allowed the Tide to end the day on a very positive note.

Two of Alabama's new coaches immediately shared their excitement on Twitter after Waddle made his announcement. And both referenced that speed that Waddle will be bringing to Tuscaloosa.

Jeff Banks @CoachJeffBanks
Juice , speed , make you miss in space! Fired up to add this playmaker. #HOU-BAMA #RTR

Josh Gattis @Coach_Gattis
Boom.......speed kills! ???It takes a different Breed to play at Bama! #RollTide #RTR

"I think receivers are a little bit like a basketball team," Saban said. "You have a point guard. You've got a shooting guard. You've got a power forward. I mean all those different types of guys really make a good receiving core. We're excited about him because great quickness, great change of direction, really, really hard to cover and a great person."

Bama had success recruiting Florida while Jimbo was there. Ronnie Harrison is from Tallahassee. But, most of the studs in Florida are down bottom in the Dade, Broward county area. And, it's always so many good players down there that a little bit of every major program gets some.

Yep. He's a freak, too. Reminds someone on the staff of Rashaan Evans. He'll be a 5* or very close by NSD 2019.

Bama in Texas LB's top two (Hank South, BOL)

quote:

It will be Alabama and LSU duking it out for one of the Lone Star State's best, as four-star outside linebacker Marcel Brooks named the pair of SEC programs his finalists via Twitter on Wednesday.

The Flower Mound (Texas) Marcus product is expected on campus in Tuscaloosa this weekend for junior day.

The Tide offered Brooks back in October. 20 other schools have also thrown their hats into the ring.

"Coach (Nick) Saban shows me a lot of love, and they recruit me pretty well for me being in Texas," Brooks told BOL.

At 6-foot-3, 200 pounds, Brooks is rated the No. 7 outside linebacker and No. 111 player in the country, per the industry-generated 247Sports Composite.

The four-star 'backer plans to announce a commitment on June 25.

Top247 OLB Marcel Brooks down to two in SEC (Greg Powers, 247Sports)

quote:

Marcel Brooks, a 6-foot-3, 200-pound outside linebacker from Flower Mound (Texas) Marcus has announced his top two schools: Alabama and LSU.

What stands out right now about Alabama?

"Coach (Nick) Saban coming to my school multiple times and showing me a lot of love," Brooks said.

What stands out about LSU?

"Coach O (Ed Orgeron) shows me a lot of love and came to see me a lot and the staff there recruits me really hard," Brooks said. "And (the opportunity of) playing early as a freshman."

Brooks has cut his list down from over 25 national-level offers to the two schools in the SEC and he has upcoming plans to visit both programs in the upcoming weeks. He is scheduled to be at Alabama this weekend and LSU next weekend.

Brooks is on pace to make his final decision on June 25th.

Brooks checks in as the No. 111 prospect overall per the industry-generated 247Sports Composite and the No. 7 OLB nationally. He is the No, 15 prospect in the state of Texas.

247Sports Evaluation: Brooks has great first step explosion and can get to the quarterback in a hurry. When he arrives he will deliver the big hit. He has one play on tape, where it looks like he knocked himself silly delivering the power shot on a ball carrier. Physically, he is long and lean right now, but has the frame to add good weight while retaining speed. He is fast enough to be considered as a potential safety prospect, but his strengths on the field are more suited to being an outside backer. He is a high-level prospect who will get all of the offers.
