It's interesting that Locks isn't assigned to coach a position. I thought Locks or Banks might take over RBs if Burns moved on. They both have RB coaching experience.

Coach Saban seems confident: "Joe Pannunzio has done a great job in several different roles within our organization. He is an excellent coach who will do a fine job with our running backs."

I think Coach Saban has some good reasons for their position coaching assigments --

Burns wants to retire soon. So, now is a good time to make the eminent RB coach change. All of our RBs except Ford have been coached up by Burns, and he can coach up Pannunzio too.

Pannunzio is an excellent recruiter. And we're battling for the #1 and #2 RB prospects in the country (Crouch & Sanders).

Except for Key & Pannunzio, the offensive staff is new to Bama and our offense. Locks is a veteran OC who's also coached every position. I think that's why Locks won't be coaching a position.

Locks will be free to move about during position group practice sessions and meetings to help settle in the new offensive staff. And Saban can of course do the same to help the new guys on the defensive staff.

Bottom line: Coach Saban has done a masterful job of revamping the staff.

ETA: Kirk McNair (BOL) -- "When I asked Coach Bryant about making Sylvester Croom, who had been a great center, a defensive ends coach, he replied, "A good coach can coach any position."

Coach Kool isn't really a south FL guy is he? I know he coached at Miami the last 2 years, but he went to Toledo and spent most of his career at Mizzou. His ties don't run that deep do they? Is he from SFL?

I think Kuligowski is originally from Michigan. I worded that post poorly (fixed it). The U focuses heavily on recruiting South FL. So, I think after two years there, Kuligowski likely already knows that area and the HS coaches there pretty well. From his 15 years at Mizzou, he has recruiting ties in the Midwest and SEC footprint, including Texas. Houston and St Louis are a couple of talent hotbeds where he has very good ties.

Not as much as he use to be. He has a "godfather" type presence, but Golding and Scott were hired to pound the pavement there.

Yes. But with Saban and the new hires that have pretty good LA ties, we should be fine.

ETA: Thank you, Coach Burns.

It appears that Nick wanted Joe to coach RB's instead of Chris Weinke.....

The Burns family is very influential in New Orleans football. Burton Burns from what I've heard has been treated with the utmost respect by Bama so recruiting in New Orleans especially should be fine. No way Saban would treat a coach like Orgeron did when he fired Jabar Juluke. Publically, things were said to be smoothed over with Orgeron in New Orleans but I have my doubts about that.

Alabama recruiting question of the day: How Burton Burns’ new role affects recruiting

Burton Burns has moved to an off-field role.

Alabama finished 7th in the recruiting rankings in the 2018 class, but expect the Crimson Tide to be back on top in 2019. SEC Country’s Chris Kirschner will answer the Recruiting Question of the Day each weekday. You can ask him your questions on  Twitter or Facebook. Find our previous questions and answers  here.

Head scratcher... I know Coach Burns is getting older but he is a legend. From the recruiting standpoint Pannunzio doesn't impress. Who has he signed since he's been at UA?

Alabama announced Thursday that legendary running backs coach Burton Burns will move into an off-field role. His new title is assistant athletic director of football. Burns spent 11 years as Bama’s running backs coach, and during that time Mark Ingram and Derrick Henry won the Heisman Trophy. Seven running backs under Burns have gone on to the NFL. He has been a big part of the team’s success over the years.

Joe Pannunzio takes over for Burns. Pannunzio was the team’s tight ends coach last season and has never been a running backs coach. I know some fans may see that as a glaring issue, but it’s really not. If you’re a good coach, and Pannunzio has proven he is, you can coach any position on the field.

Also, I think a lot of fans may not realize but Pannunzio did an excellent job recruiting for Alabama in the Class of 2018. He was the primary recruiter for 5-star cornerback Patrick Surtain Jr. and 4-star cornerback Josh Jobe. He also played a big role in keeping 4-star Jack linebacker Jordan Davis and 4-star wide receiver Xavier Williams committed for as long as they were.

Davis raved about Pannunzio on our recruiting show when he called him “a great friend, coach and mentor.”

Pannunzio currently is the primary recruiter for Class of 2019 4-star safety commit Brandon Turnage and 5-star linebacker Nakobe Dean, with whom Alabama is in a strong position.

There shouldn’t be any drop-off when it comes to recruiting with Burns’ new role. In my opinion, it’s probably the best recruiting move the team could have made. We’ll see what happens on the field.

Craig Kuligowski a 'massive' hire for Alabama

quote:

Marcus Spears was among those that posted reactions on social media Monday night when word began to spread that Craig Kuligowski may land at Alabama.

"Craig Kuligowski is a Bad man at getting Dlineman that 'Bag' and making them better," the former NFL defensive lineman and current SEC Network analyst wrote. "He goes to Bama it's gonna be a problem."

Landing Kuligowski as defensive line coach is considered a big deal for the Crimson Tide.

This 49-year old known as "Coach Kool" has long been regarded as one of the nation's top defensive line coaches and will now be joining Alabama's staff after spending the last two seasons at Miami.

Aided by Kuligowski's defensive line, the Hurricanes ranked first nationally in sacks last season and were fourth in tackles for a loss. Three members of that D-line received All-ACC recognition.

Before Miami, Kuligowski spent 15 seasons at Missouri, where he helped five players develop into NFL first-round draft picks.

Kuligowski, who was an all-conference offensive tackle under Nick Saban at Toledo in 1990, was also reportedly in the mix for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' defensive line coach job.

"I have known Craig for a long time, going all the way back to my first head coaching job at Toledo when he was one of our starting offensive tackles," Saban said. "He is an outstanding football coach who will bring great energy to our program. Craig does a tremendous job of developing players and has proven to be an exceptional recruiter."

Cole Cubelic of the SEC Network was among the others in the football world that reacted on social media once word began to spread about Kuligowski and Alabama on Monday. Like Spears, he talked about why this is such a big move for the Tide.

Cole Cubelic @colecubelic
Not that Bama needs it. MASSIVE hire. Amazing coach. @LetsMeetAtTheQB is one of the best in college football. That group will improve rapidly.

"Alabama officially promotes Mike Locksley, Josh Tupoi to coordinator roles"

The writer calls him "Josh Tupoi" throughout the article except when quoting Saban...

I think he really slowed down in that area recently. We should still have the benefit of his contacts, he's still in the program.

Burns did an awesome job for us, and I'm glad he's remaining with the program because he's widely respected. Luckily, running back is probably the easiest position to coach. We are going to keep getting stud rbs and producing great olines, that 90% of a successful running game right there

Pretty good "Cliff's Notes" article:

Guide to Alabama football 2018 coaching changes, roster changes (al.com)
quote:

A lot has happened since Alabama left the confetti shower in Atlanta. The end of the season is like a starter's pistol for shifts in the rosters of both players and coaches.

That's been no different if not more active than normal in the time since the Crimson Tide last played a football game. Some of the moves were announced or at least reported before the Jan. 8 CFP championship game with Georgia.

All the transactions could've been a little confusing. To reset the situation, we made this little guide. It is still subject to change with further moves still possible. It's also worth noting the hiring of incoming analysts aren't publicized like the addition of assistant coaches.

Coaches out

-- OC Brian Daboll to Buffalo Bills as OC

-- DC Jeremy Pruitt to Tennessee Vols as head coach

-- DB coach Derrick Ansley to Oakland Raiders as DB coach

-- DL coach Karl Dunbar to the Pittsburgh Steelers as DL coach

Staff out

-- Bobby Williams, special assistant to Nick Saban, to Oregon as TE coach

-- Offensive analyst Chris Weinke to Tennessee as RB coach

-- Offensive analyst Dan Werner to South Carolina as QB coach

-- Defensive analyst Wesley Neighbors to FAU as safeties coach

-- Analyst Taylor Edwards to Arkansas

-- Analyst Shea Tierney to Buffalo Bills

-- Analyst William Vlachos to Buffalo Bills

-- Ed Marynowitz, associate athletic director for football

Coaches in

-- Pete Golding (pictured), middle LB coach from UTSA

-- Jeff Banks, TE coach/special teams coordinator from Texas A&M

-- Josh Gattis, WR coach from Penn State

-- Dan Enos, QB coach/assistant head coach from Michigan

-- Craig Kuligowski, defensive line coach from Miami

Internal coaching moves

-- Mike Locksley to offensive coordinator from WR coach

-- Tosh Lupoi to defensive coordinator along with outside LB coach

-- Burton Burns to assistant athletics director for football from RB coach

-- Joe Pannunzio to RB coach from TE coach

Yep, he's influential with coaches there moreso than recruits now. His new role should still allow his impact, even though he's not a coach anymore.

We have a new Director of Recruiting, apparently.

Per Football Scoop:

quote:

Alabama: Source tells FootballScoop UCLA director of recruiting Victoria Ross (who previously attended and interned at Alabama) is returning to Alabama in the same capacity. Source adds that Leah Knight who currently occupies that role, is stepping down to move closer to her fiance in Colorado.
