I don't know why, but I saw this on someone's signature and instantly thought of Missouri.

I'm good with this he coached at my Alma Mater. The DIII non-powerhouse US Merchant Marine Academy. His season there he held rival US Coast Guard Academy to 3 points in the Secretaries Cup on the road in hostile New London, CT.

welp, after reading a lot of that thread most ND fans are really pissed that Elko is leaving (makes me feel better), he was considered a good recruiter and they really don't want him to take some assistant named Clark Lea with him.

so, who is this clark lea, and can we get him too?

As long as he gets guys that can teach the defense how to continuously tackle I don’t care if he brings the mascot.

Sadly, there's a "No Leprechauns" clause in his contract.

Usually total defense is the more reliable stat when determining if a defense is good.

And even then, 31st isn't great.

ND scoring defense
2014 29.2 (84th)
2015 24.1 (39th)
2016 27.8 (61st)
2017 21.5 (31st) (Elko's first, A&M btw 87th at 30.7)

Not Alabama eye-popping, but that's pretty good in one year with the same players.

Scoring defense is more important than blanket yardage stats.

Elko is one of only two DC to coach a top 40 defense for five straight years.

Sorry. I just don't want a defense that allows the ball to be marched down the field.

I want a physical defense that forces 3 and outs. Bend but don't break defenses usually end up breaking at crucial times.

The object of a defense is to stop points, not yards. “Yardage” has never won a game.

Like I said earlier, total defense is usually a better indicator on the quality of a coordinator than scoring defense. Bend but don't break always breaks in crucial moments. It's why 3rd and Chavis was a thing at LSU.

And even if you wanted to use scoring defense as an argument, Elko doesn't have those stats. His best scoring defense at Wake Forest fell outside of the top 20.

I think we could have done better. If we were willing to spend over 2 Million, we should have gone after Brent Venables or Bud Foster.

(Somebody gotta fill in for CGSC and be a NegAggie ...may as well be me .)

That basically translates as “I want a defense filled with at least four top ten class in five years, and at least two top five ones in that timeframe.”

Jimbo is working on that. He seems to have a better plan for recruiting (and a better track record doing it) than any coach in our recent history.

A lot of bad coaching isn’t only what killed the wrecking crew, it’s the fact we haven’t recruited on that level since RC’s best days (ie pre Mack Brown).

I have no reason to think that Elko is not a competent defensive coach. He has climbed pretty high in the profession at the age of 40. As near as I can tell Wake Forest and ND seem to think he did good work while there.

Keep in mind that some proven DCs, such as Venables, are already in a good spot and probably have their eyes set on a head coaching position.
