Just reported on JOX. Gus apparently implied that Pettway may not come back next season. Will have a conversation with him at the end of the season.
Not really new news to us but interesting that Gus has confirmed it.

All the cheering I did for that kid and this is how he treats me. What an ungrateful punk.

Another potential star RB being “let go,” kicked off or allowed to transfer. Son of a bitch.
Mike Dyer
Roc Thomas
Jovon Robinson
Kam Pettway ( ? )
Has to be drug related. There’s no way he won’t be healed for the Peach Bowl.

I'd bet that Pettway is going to decide to go pro, even if Gus was happy about him coming back.
A lot of RBs make it as late RD / UDFA picks. Pettway has a wife/child, I imagine they are ready to start making some $

I imagine that is a factor, but given the rumors of drug use, etc, it’s hard to tell.
Either way, if he leaves early, I think he’s putting himself in a bad position and an uphill climb. His time to leave was last year, IMO.
Good luck to him either way.

So he basically just produced 7-8 games in his career?

He was a solid, productive hback as well.

There have been several posts on the Bunker that state wife has been discouraging him from playing due to injury concern and his potential NFL career.
Yes, I realize there's not much film for scouts, but he has a young daughter and the potential payday has a lot of influence over people's decisions.
I hate it because I was really looking forward to him playing another season at full health.

I just don’t see him transitioning to the next level. His lateral movement is well below average. His power advantage will be reduced in the NFL. Probably a FB type role is his best bet.

I mean, he has plantar fasciitis + went through shoulder surgery. It was pretty clear KP was injured and a shell of the 2016 version as you'd expect w/ PF and then you add in shoulder surgery. Plantar Fasciitis takes a long time to heal, Amari Cooper suffered his entire rookie season from it.
I wouldn't be shocked if KP got in some trouble, but it isn't likely to be that bad. Given that Sean White was kicked off the team mid year, if KP's off field problems were that bad, it is hard to imagine he'd still be on the team.

It is still much better than if he returns and goes out as a 23 YO RB
Even if KP returns and repeats 2016, his skillset has a ceiling of very late 3rd to 5th RD pick (Perine 4th, Foreman late 3rd). Given his injury history + potential off field issues, KP is likely 6-7th at best. The significant benefit to RD4 vs RD6-7 draft pick isn't additional $ but guaranteed contract $ which makes you more likely to make team (cuts = dead money)
The problem is a drafted contract is 4 years, which means he'd be entering his 27-28YO for his 2nd deal (where the real money starts). Right now, 27YO RBs make almost no money at all, especially bigger RBs who can't catch (see Alfred Morris)
As an UDFA this year, he'd be eligible to sign a second contract after only 3 years in his RB prime at age 25-26YO year which would get him more money and longer contract

We all should have invested in bitcoin when it was at $20 too

Tells me KJ is coming back

If any of the other running backs we recruited are worth anything he won't be missed much. If KJ comes back he won't be missed at all.

Yeah, that seems to have been going around for a while now.

Asa Martin will sign early on Dec 20th and be at bowl practice. He will enroll in Jan.

It isn't likely that KP would have helped himself NFL wise by coming back. The more mediocre to above avg games he plays, even "playing through injury," the more it dilutes his 2016 season performance
Even if KP were to come back and kill it, he'd probably be Carl Lawson'd in the draft. Getting healthy for the SR bowl + combine is probably his best option

Is he that good? I mean, I know he's a highly rated back, but I always expect a few years of learning curve for new guys. Took KJ three years to really get to where he is now. Pettway was a sophomore when he broke out.
I think we've only had two true freshman make impacts at running back in my memory - Mike Dyer 2010 and Carnell Williams 2000.

Learning curve for RBs?... it’s not like Gus’s offense is rocket surgery.
And yes, Asa Martin is that good... and he’s got great hands. Dudes a complete back.
