Look at these first round matchups based on the AP Poll

No. 16 Mississippi State at No 1 Alabama
A rematch of an exciting regular season matchup.

No. 15 Washington at No. 2 Miami
A cross country trip for the Huskies, but a chance to avenge the Pac 12's dismal season.

No. 14 Washington State at No. 3 Oklahoma
Mike Leach returns to the Big 12

No. 13 UCF at No. 4 Clemson
Let's see what the Knights have got.

No. 12 Penn State at No. 5 Wisconsin
A conference matchup that didn't happen.

No. 6 Auburn at No. 11 Southern Cal
P5 conference champions are guaranteed home games in my playoff. Auburn bitches about the road trip but wins by 2 TDs.

No. 10 TCU at No. 7 Georgia
Defense reigns supreme.

No. 9 Notre Dame at No. 8 Ohio State
With the right to play Alabama on the line, could be the most watched non title game ever.

Potential second round matchups
Notre Dame-Alabama
Ohio State - Alabama
Georgia - Miami
Oklahoma - Auburn

In no universe does the 16th ranked team in the country deserve to be competing for a national championship. Not in college football.

Every other division of football does at least 16. Division II does 28 I learned yesterday.

Completely different world in FBS. When is the last time you saw a 16th ranked team that was a legitimate national title contender?

I can’t think of any. Ever.

Only because the format of FBS football doesn't allow for it.

And their regular seasons are shite as a result, NFL included.

My realistic plan would be this:

Eight teams
Power 5 Conference Champions + 3 At -Large

If a non-P5 conference champion is ranked No. 9 or No. 10, they get the bid over the No. 8 team.

Would only work if every team had a 10 game schedule. Would cause programs to lose too much money.

Yeah cause up to 4 extra games for the best teams, and most draftable players is a super smart idea for the healthy of the players.

Some of yall really need to think outside of just your own entertainment.

CFP will also collaspe as it's easier to fill arenas than stadiums with fans. And easier to travel with smaller teams, and equipment like basketball.

Really not that hard to see why this would be horrible. For conf champioships, and reg season too

No, because the 16th ranked team is never, and I mean “never” very literally, on par with the Top 2 teams. There has never been a year that a mid-tier Top 25 team was consistently on par with the top ranked team in the country.

And conference title games would have to go bye bye too.

I agree. I think a program in a non power 5 conference should be able to possibly get in with one loss. 16 teams is the only way to do this. It will go to 16 because they can still use the bowl games, and it is best for the sport. Regular season games will always matter so that argument is idiotic.

LSU is going to be ranked around #18 in the next CFP this week. A win over aTm and a couple of upsets and they are in the playoffs.

I’ve seen LSU teams deserving of a shot at a NC. This team is far from that caliber. A 3 loss team with a loss to Troy shouldn’t be anywhere near a playoff.

16 teams

That would make the regular season pointless
Mississippi State is good but they have 3 losses. That should not guarantee them a playoff spot against undefeated and 1 loss teams (unless theyre SEC champ and it's a six game playoff with conference champs getting an automatic birth)

6-8 team is all that’s needed. That way 5 conf champions get rewarded and make the p/o. If it’s 6. Then one at large and top 2 get a bye. If it’s 8 which imo is better because a team like UCF could have a shot. Plus there’s always a team or two that lose early but get hot and finish strong. Like Auburn this year. Or penn st last year
