Saban: It's never been about the money for me, I don't believe I am worth what I am paid

USA TODAY Sports asked to speak to Saban for this story. Josh Maxson, Alabama’s assistant athletics director for football communications, said there’d be no chance for a one-on-one interview but invited USA TODAY Sports to ask a question at one of Saban’s weekly news conferences. The question: You’re making about $11.1 million this season. Are you worth it?

That’s when Saban said probably not. “But I really don’t do this for the money,” he added, “never really have.”

Saban talked about how he began his career as a graduate assistant more than 40 years ago and how he made $8,000 (nearly $38,000 in today's dollars) when he got his first full-time gig as an assistant. He began as a grad assistant at Kent State, his alma mater, and that’s where he became linebackers coach in 1975.

“And that was after two years of being a graduate assistant and making nothing, going to graduate school and working, loading trucks at night and my wife worked in the registrar’s office,” Saban said. “We were happy when my dad brought us a case of peas, so we could have a side dish when we were eating. We worked hard through the years.”

Saban’s tone suggested that perhaps he considered the question an impertinence.

“I don’t think it’s up to me to determine what the value is or what the market is for coaches, or what value I have created for this institution or this place,” Saban said. “I think those people” — school administrators, presumably — “made those decisions. We haven’t asked for anything.”

“We’ve been treated extremely well here,” Saban said. “We certainly appreciate it. I appreciate our administration. I appreciate our athletic administration for the way they’ve supported the program and helped us be successful, and I’ve been thankful for what they’ve done for my family. But I’m not the one that determines what you just asked.”

Yea it's never been about the money, Saban just loves to see other schools (especially LSU) struggle to keep up and watch other fans cry and suffer. Saban lives on their tears.

After a point, I'm sure it's not.

When you do something well, it's a fricking great feeing and it's addicting.

I mean I believe him. You hire the best agent you can, he gets you what the market dictates. He deserves what he's paid.

Is Saban worth it?

That's a dumb question. Saban coaching there is probably worth $100MM(if not more) to the athletic department.

It's easy to say that when you're making 11 million a year to coach football

Jimmy Sexton does all of this for him

I find that unlikely considering you're making $10M

Considering Alabama's athletic department and university have increased their value exponentially since he arrived, I'd say he's worth a lot more.

The amount of out-of-state students they've raked in alone makes him worth $20 million. And yes, football success is a huge part of increasing enrollment.

We had to hire four instructors at Auburn to teach comp classes after the 2013 season. I was told that any time Auburn has a championship football team, the number of students accepting their offer to Auburn can increase by over a thousand.

That's true humility right there. That back stabbing 0gre at L6U could learn a thing or two from Saban regarding humility and integrity

Not about the money? Then offer him $100,000 and see what he does.

When you're proven like he has, he should have the say in what he gets paid. Dude is just a winner so he should set the bar.

Not to mention how much $$ he brings into the state alone. I mean, how else would his players get their hands on fancy Dodge Chargers?

You disliked Gene Stallings? Mike DuBose? I'd get Fran after the whole Saban 31-0 internet thing, but how can you hate Gene Stallings?

Mike DuBose is a clown, how the hell could anyone hate him (I mean except for Alabama fans)?

Of course it's been about the money. And its not just Saban, its pretty much every head coach of every major sport. Head coaches are among the most egotistical human beings on this planet, and they expect to be treated well.

A head coach that truly doesn't care about wealth would be coaching high school teams, or Division III colleges.

Saban may be truthful in that he doesn't believe he is worth what he is being paid, but you can bet money that he expects to be paid what the market dictates, regardless if he is worth it. Otherwise, he wouldn't be.....

Of course it’s not about the money once you’ve made as much as he has.
