The thread on the upcoming Tennessee coaching search got me thinking, and I'd love to hear tRant's opinion:

Is Tennessee a better job than A&M?
Is Auburn a better job than Tennessee?

How likely are established P5 coaches to leave their gigs for another college job? Going from Vandy to Penn State seems to make sense. Going from Wisconsin to Arkansas, looks to be a bad move (obviously, there were some extenuating circumstances there).

TAMU could be the best gig in the country if we were getting wins. Recruiting hotbed, facilities, and deep pockets. If we were getting Saban-like results, we could afford to pay more than Bama without batting an eye.

A&M should be a better job than UT, but I'm not sure it is. That said, between Texas and A&M, first one to hire the right coach could dominate the state for a while.

UT has to recruit nationally and that just isn't easy....although Lyle didn't have trouble getting talent to K'ville and neither did Freshwater.

UT I think is a better job than AU. Auburn does very well given the hand they were dealt.

A&M has lots of money and the excitement of moving to the SEC still fresh. UT has 20 years of mostly disappointments.

So I'll go with A&M.

Auburn has a couple championship appearances, a national title and probably should have been there once more in the last 15 years. UT has 2 SEC East championships and 6 losing seasons in that span.

So I have to go with Auburn.

All three programs are top tier jobs, imo. They are pretty equal as far as what they can offer to a potential coach. I think the difference is so minimal that it will all come down to personal preference and roster for any incoming coach.

The questions are not only "are they" but "should they be"?

Tennessee has more historical prestige than either of those schools, but Auburn has much more recent success.

Tennessee has no real "in-state" competition for recruits. Vandy will have the occasional good team, but Auburn has to recruit against Alabama and Texas A&M has to recruit against Texas (and a slew of other solid to good programs, like TCU and Houston).

A&M has the most money of the three, but that has not translated to significant success. A solid program, sure, but investment to result is low. Compare that to AU, for example.

AU has always had trouble with their BoT controlling things from the background, and have not had a powerful enough coach since Dye to counteract that. Alabama had a similar problem after Bryant retired - only Stallings exhibited significant control, partially - until Saban arrived and laid down the law.

I cannot state if Tennessee or A&M have similar issues with boosters or trustees, honestly.

All three programs are a step up from a non-p5 school, obviously. There are some P5 programs that they would also be a step up from. Kentucky, for example, in football. Baylor. Washington and Washington State. Just to name a few.

I would put all three roughly on par with each other, where there might be other circumstances that play into it. If they have family in Georgia, Auburn is the best place to go. If they want to live in Texas, A&M then. If they REALLY love Dollyworld, Tennessee.

It might even boil down to the college town each is in - if that's the case, then A&M and Auburn have a leg up on Tennessee. Sorry guys.

Job Prestige Rankings in the SEC:

1. Alabama-
It's a pretty easy place to win. They have a history of producing Championship teams; the facilities are among the best in the country. And the fan support is unmatched anywhere (which could actually be a slight detriment if the coach prefers privacy).

2. LSU
They have the whole state to themselves and border states like Mississippi and Arkansas which are no real threat to recruiting. Sure, they also sit next to Texas but Baton Rouge is about 400 miles from either Austin or College Station.

3. Georgia
Sure, Florida has more fertile recruiting, but they also must compete with Florida State and Miami for it. Georgia has great facilities and the best college town in the SEC.

4. Florida
If this were the early 2000s, they'd be #2 and arguably #1. But we're seeing the second consecutive coach and 3rd of the last 4 head coaches in Gainesville struggle to be relevant on a national level.

5. Auburn
Sure they have to compete with Alabama in-state, but that hasn't stopped Auburn from winning one and playing for two National Titles during the Saban era alone. They sit close enough to both Georgia and Florida that it makes recruiting those fertile states relatively easy. Every AU HC hired since 1981 has either won an SEC Title or had an undefeated season. That shows that despite having to go head-to-head with Alabama, it is still a relatively easy place to win.

6. Texas A&M
If this were the late 1990s, Tennessee would sit at #3 and Texas A&M (if they were in the SEC) would sit at #7. But Tennessee has slipped and the facilities at Texas A&M are now arguably the best in America. A lot of this ranking is based off of potential, but there is more untapped potential in College Station than anywhere else in America.

7. Tennessee
With a stadium that seats over 100,000 and outstanding fan support, Tennessee will likely never slide any lower than 7th in the league. But after being down for so long, why would anyone want to come coach there? Fulmer struggled in his final years and was only able to win 2 SEC Titles over the course of about 15 seasons.... Kiffin bolted after just one year. Dooley and Butch have both failed. Is it possible to win in Knoxville these days when you have Georgia and Florida to compete with in the East, and Bama on the schedule every single year?

8. South Carolina
South Carolina is a much more fertile state in terms of recruiting compared to Arkansas. It's also growing at a very fast rate, and its sandwiched next to recruiting hotbeds Georgia and North Carolina.

9. Arkansas
The fan support is good. Their history (pre 1990s) is good. The town of Fayetteville is a great place. But its location is a world away most high school football recruiting hotbeds. It's very difficult to convince a top recruit to come play some place that is a plane ride away from their hometown, not to mention its a program that has rarely been relevant nationally since the 1980s.

10. Ole Miss
This could take a tumble depending on NCAA sanctions, but Ole Miss has a decent history (albeit ancient). Oxford is a great town. And the state of Mississippi surprisingly produces a good bit of talent considering its small size.

11. Missouri
They've had decent success over the years. Their stadium is getting nicer. There are 28 Million people living in Missouri and the bordering states of Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, and Arkansas and not a single powerhouse program in the region.

12. Mississippi State
Facility upgrades and flashes of relevancy in recent years has brought Mississippi State up from next-to-last in the conference.

13. Kentucky
Having to play second fiddle to basketball makes it very difficult for Kentucky to ever be a prestigious job. It also makes it difficult to win.

14. Vanderbilt
For the first time in a generation, Vandy seems on the cusp of actually possibly moving out of the last place position. To be honest, they've been more successful on the football field than Kentucky during the last decade. Nashville's growth and cool factor have got to be making it easier to recruit there. Not to mention you can recruit kids who want a degree from a top notch school like Vanderbilt. If they were able to string together a few years of success, and with a few facilities upgrades, Vandy has potential to be a better job than both Kentucky and Mississippi State... maybe others too.

I think all are about equal. Tennessee does have the advantage of being the top dog in their state.

Auburn and AM are too close to talent to be behind UT.

It’s all and always will be about $. Saban would leave Bama to coach at DeVry tomorrow morning if they offered him $30,000,000 to coach their online team.

Of course Penn State is a better job than Vandy, but if Vandy decided to pay that man $8,000,000 a season he doesn’t jump.

For this reason, since A&M has more $ I’d assume it’s a better job. The question is will Tenn or A&M offer substantially more money than the Wisconsin’s of the world to take their coaches. Prestige alone ain’t making a single coach change schools.

20 years ago, yeah. Today not so much.

In the 90's/00's it was a wash, with maybe a UT lead. Today, I think you have to go with AU.

UT just isn't attractive. They are sort of like Nebraska in a way---they have big name recognition and a good brand but shitty recruiting grounds. Just like it is hard to convince kids to go to bum frick Lincoln, NE when they can just go to OU, Texas, or TCU, it's hard to convince kids in the south to go to UT when they can just go to UGA, Bammer, UF and AU. The UT program relies on out of state recruits and it's very hard to pull Alabama kids from bammer, Georgia kids from UGA and AU, Louisiana kids from LSU, and Florida kids from UF and FSU (and now Miami). That's some tough sleddin'. Tennessee doesn't have 5 stars growing on trees 2 miles from campus like an LSU does.

However, Butch Jones has shown that he can recruit good talent. Since 2013, he has had UT at #13 average in recruiting. Not as good as Bama (no one is), but pretty close to UGA, AU, and UF (Florida was #11 over that time span, for instance).

I think the right coach can win at UT, but it's harder to do there than perhaps other "big 6" schools (in my mind, UT has dropped out of the "big 6" and are probably closer to like 8th or 9th today).

Trying to be completely unbiased, but if I was a coach and I had to choose from TAMU, Tennessee, and Auburn.

I'd choose TAMU.

1. Biggest checkbook

2. If I want something for the team, the University is going to give it to me.

3. Geographically in the best recruiting spot in the country. Less than 2 hours away from 3 of the largest recruiting areas in the country.

Those things would give me the best chance to succeed, and nothing makes someone happier than success.
