Your thoughts on Bama's offense after game 1

I know it's just 1 game against a very good defensive opponent, but...
Hurts is still afraid to make a mistake.
Hurts starts looking to run if his first option isn't open.
The coaches aren't designing any routes across the middle. What are they hiding?
DH should be getting 25 carries per game.
Saban must hate passes to the TEs.
BoScar will not live up to expectations.
OL needs lots of work.
I was super excited about the offense's potential, but I didn't really see any improvement in any offensive unit...or in the play calling. It seems like there were fewer negative plays (besides Ridley's dumb decision to run backwards), so I guess that's the lone bright spot. Maybe Hurts 'is what he is' and will never be a comfortable pocket passer.
Maybe I'm spoiled, but I miss the days of McElroy and AJ finding a rhythm on drives, the running game making teams quit, and the offense looking like it was executing a plan.

I guess you don't remember 2013 v Virginia Tech. This was essentially the same game against a better oppnonent.

I think my main concern is that despite the weak outing against tech in 2013, we were fresh off great showings to end 2012.
This looks like the same offense that couldn't sustain drives against Washington and Clemson. 3-16 on third down is fricking putrid. There's really no excuse to be that bad against any college defense with the collection of talent we have. It's very worrisome. The blue print was laid out, blitz Alabama all night and they can't sustain a drive.
We are 9-45 on third down in our last 3 games. 9-45

I was somewhat disappointed because I thought we would see some different things. I was really hoping to see some throws over the middle and to the TEs in the flat. Some of that could be due to our OL I guess.
If we aren't doing that over the next few weeks I'm going to assume that it's just not part of the plan.

Didn't see anything I was overly concerned about. OL has some things to clean up, especially on the right side, but thought they did decent.

- Thought Hurts looked good when he had time to throw...his deep ball looks much improved...
- Thought the OL was manhandled most of the night, in particular on pass plays...this is my biggest concern on offense...hoping it's just that FSU's DL is elite...
- Think Damien Harris is our best back...he's the most patient, waits for gaps to develop and then hits 'em quick...
- With all the off-season talk 'bout Daboll using TEs, they seemed non-existent...
- Will withhold thoughts on Hurts' ability to read defenses...since he didn't have time to throw on many pass plays, still in wait and see mode...

Not concerned about 3 guys catching a pass? Hurts had more completions to himself than any WR not named Ridley
It was sloppy as hell, I saw a lot to be concerned with. Take away the fantastic special teams effort that won't be replicated every week and that's a nail biter.

Being down on Hurts' play while he was being chased by FSU's defense all night long due to poor OL play is pretty premature. He did a great job of avoiding pressure, which is what he had to do on pretty much every single play.

I said "overly concerned," and no I'm not really overly concerned that we struggled against an elite defense with a new offensive coordinator. Certainly a lot of room for improvement, but I'll wait a few more games before hitting the panic button.

That was a very strong defense and it was game 1. The jury is still out.
But it looked exactly like our offense in our worst games last season. IE, games against good defenses.
Not impressed, and wondering if Daboll has brought anything fresh to the table. Hope so.

My thoughts personally are that we should switch to the triple option for a season. Hurts, Harrisx2, and Scarbrough, would be unstoppable.

Jury very much still out. Felt ok about Jalen. His accuracy seemed better, his vision did not. However, he was rushed quite a bit.
Was initially impressed with Daboll's early script, but as the game went on it really felt predictable and stale.
Not necessary concerned with the OL because the quality of defensive front was incredibly high, but certainly wasn't impressed.
Definitely have some kinks to work out. Two weeks to work on them then a nice test at Vanderbilt.

quote:Not really a bad thing. His caution may be the difference in a winning drive vs. a game ending pick.
Hurts is still afraid to make a mistake.
quote:Wrong. The pocket collapsing flushed him out to where he couldn't see open receivers on some plays. It happens against fast, good defenses more than you know.
Hurts starts looking to run if his first option isn't open.
quote:Wrong. We ran drags on Saturday. Some quick TE pops are needed though.

quote:No need with the stable of backs that we have. 15 touches for sure though.
DH should be getting 25 carries per game.

My thoughts as well. My fear is that Daboll, who isn't a seasoned playcaller, is just using our playbook from last year.
We still struggled to have sustained drives. That has been our biggest problem over the last year.

Agree with Monty. How on earth is Bo not living up to expectations? FSU is an elite defense. Harris had a little more success on the night and would be considered the hot hand. We know Bo is the real deal. In big games he was the fricking GOAT. I'm fine with how Jalen played, he didn't turn it over, he hit some good passes, he avoided the CONSTANT pressure, and we had 1 holding call which was total shite. Sure we can clean up a lot but frick it was the number 3 team and they were head to toe loaded.

Or many other games
Hurts averaged 5.3 yards per attempt against FSU.
Here are Bama QBs with games equal or worse than that number since 2009.
2009 McElroy vs Ole Miss - 4.3 ypa
2009 McElroy vs South Carolina - 4.6 ypa
2009 McElroy vs Tennessee - 4.1 ypa
2009 McElroy vs Texas - 5.3 ypa
2010 McElroy vs Florida - 4.9 ypa
2011 McCarron vs Penn State - 5.3 ypa
2013 McCarron vs Virgina Tech - 4.6 ypa
2014 Blake Sims vs LSU - 4.6 ypa
2015 Jake Coker vs Ole Miss - 4.5 ypa
2015 Jake Coker vs ULM - 5.1 ypa
2016 Jalen Hurts vs Ole Miss - 5.1 ypa
2016 Jalen Hurts vs Washington - 4.1 ypa
2016 Jalen Hurts vs Clemson - 4.2 ypa
Honorable mentions
2011 McCarron vs Florida - 5.6 ypa
2013 McCarron vs Ole Miss - 5.6 ypa
2015 Jake Coker vs Texas A&M - 5.5 ypa
So what you're actually saying is that you miss games when Alabama quarterbacks play really, really well and just plain out forget games ever happened when they don't - unless you're talking a"bout the current QB (whomever he may be) and in that case he sucks because his predecessors always played well."
McElroy had more games as a first year starter where his YPA was worse than Hurts in his first year as a starter - and Hurts started as a true freshman.
You'll also note that 2012 was the only season where Bama QBs didn't have at least one game where the passing attack did as poorly or worse than it did against FSU.
Posted on 9/5/17 at 12:30 pm to JustGetItRight
Yea - we had a quite a few 11/20 117 yard passing type games in 2009. McElroy was as bad as any QB we've had (including Pennington and Avalos) over that 3-4 game stretch in 2009.

The OL needs to improve. Yes, they were playing probably the 2nd best defense in the country.
However, they go against the BEST DL in the country every day. Hurts looked ok when he wasn't running for his life.
Last week we were counting Harris out, now we're bitching because he doesn't get 25 carries a game.
I wanted to see Foster involved more.
I'm not ignorant enough to believe out of 30K students we can't find one that can make a 40yd FG.

After a single game it's tough to say. It was a strange game, really. The only thing I can say for certain is Damien Harris needs more carries. He's never truly been given the workload. He's not a huge back like Henry I know, but I'm not saying give him 30 or more a game. But if he gets 17-21 a game he could be putting up crazy numbers and sustaining drives. He's got elite vision, and all the physical attributes in the world don't beat elite vision for a RB.

The play action pass is almost always gonna be our best pass play due to our running game.
I'd love to see some passes like Indiana threw against Ohio State, minus the int's. They got the ball out in about 1 second.
