The head nurse in a Utah hospital burn unit says she was assaulted and forcefully arrested by a Salt Lake City detective after refusing to violate hospital policy by allowing the officer to take a blood sample from an unconscious patient without a search warrant.

The officer, Detective Jeff Payne, insists that he has the authority to draw blood from a patient who was badly burned in a head-on crash (the other driver, who smashed into the patient’s truck while fleeing police, was killed).

Wubbels gets her supervisor on the phone to back up her repeated assertion that she can’t allow Payne, a trained police phlebotomist, to draw blood from the trucker, who was not suspected of a crime, without a search warrant.

Her supervisor can be heard saying: “Sir, you’re making a huge mistake because you’re threatening a nurse.”

With that remark (which happens around the six-minute mark), Payne seems to lose his temper completely, grabbing ahold of the nurse, pinned her arms behind her back, pulled her out of the building, handcuffed her and put her in an unmarked police car.

As other hospital officials attempt to reason with Payne, he tells them that the nurse was interfering with a police investigation. He also insists that consent from the unconscious patient to draw blood was implied–even though that hasn’t been Utah state law since 2007, according to The Salt Lake Tribune.

paid vacation for the cop incoming

*update*

paid vacation confirmed

quote:

Two Salt Lake City police officers have been placed on paid administrative leave after a shocking video of a nurse's arrest sparked nationwide outrage.

The Salt Lake City police department announced on Friday that it had put Detective Jeff Payne, the officer who arrested Alex Wubbels, plus a second employee, on leave "pending the results of an investigation." The second employee was not identified, but police spokeswoman Christina Judd confirmed to NBC News on Saturday that he was also a police officer.

She should've hit him with the defibrillator while yelling, "frick da PO-lice".

I'm generally pro-LEO, but this guy was out of line.

It's pretty obvious what happened.

This guys family is going to sue the shite out of the police over the reckless chase. They wanted blood hoping that he'd test positive for alcohol or narcotics to hopefully compromise his civil suit.

Why does the police attract so many bullies?

The best ones I used to know were ex MPs. They had a much easier going attitude.

What pisses me off is cops like that, who exercise reckless abandonment when "enforcing" their perception of the law, are what make it incredibly dangerous for those who do it the right way. And he'll end up on a desk for a few months at worst.

I'm normally anti police, and not shocked in the slightest. My favorite part is where the "good cops" sat by and did nothing.

I try to be fair to police officers, I really do, and I am by no means saying there aren't any good police officers out there but god damn, I have seen enough

Lots of people, especially around the south, most of whom are older than me, complain all the time about the lack of respect shown to police officers these days

Well here's the thing about respect, respect is earned and tbh I don't think law enforcement as a whole is doing a whole lot to earn respect right now

I'll spare yall the Details but I know for a fact a police officer locally told multiple bold faced lies today while testifying in court. There have been several other things happen recently that have been quite disappointing but this nurse incident just sends me over the edge

I'm tired of defending them, of making excuses for them, of trying to claim it's just a few bad apples. It's more than that, much more than that

That fricker is gonna need medical care sooner or later and my fellow nurses will be waiting. Trust me when I say there are perfectly legal ways of getting him back.

Cop was a 1000% wrong in this case. But even if the cop is wrong, let them arrest you and then sort it out later. Physically resisting arrest will never do you any good

It should be more difficult to get a law enforcement job. If we'd gut the welfare state and transfer that money to law enforcement we could attract more stable men and women to police departments and be more selective regarding who gets hired.

This true, but no matter what, the cops need to be prosecuted when they break the law while on duty. There are so many tyrant cops and no punishment.

I read somewhere (I think FB) that some of those other guys were just security guards. If that's the case I guarantee you they have little to no training and they're just ROD's (retired on duty). If I had to guess they were probably thinking oh shite what do I do? Naturally with no training human instinct is to just do nothing and freeze. That's the problem with police, too many of them don't put themselves in high stress training scenarios, which is why when crap hits the fan they make horrible split second decisions. You will not rise to the occasion when a high stress situation occurs, you'll fall back on your level of training every time. If you have little to zero training, then you're going to fail.

The crazy thing is. It wasn't even their department wrecked in. It was another city in Utah.

People would save themselves a lot of pain if they'd follow this simple bit of advice.

Even if you're right, fight with an officer in the field and you will lose every single time.

Go peacefully and you'll still get your check but you won't have to let the bruises heal or get the stitches taken out before you can spend it.

Rant over

I know a cop that spewed loads of lies in a case.

Yes there are good cops out there, but I have lots of bad experiences personally.
