I heard scurrying and clicking sounds coming from the attic

this evening, lowered the ladder, climbed up inside...and was horrified to discover a nest of BLACK RATS!
Now what? How do I get rid of them? I have a dog. Doesn't the smell of a dog scare them off?
Please help.

Start trapping cats with raccoon traps, and release them in the attic.
Seriously, I can only offer help on what not to do. Don't poison them. They will die up there, start stinking, and you won't be able to find them all.

Yes, stop bathing your dog for a few months. Let him piss in the attic as well.

Can I buy a king snake at a pet store? I've never gone shopping for snakes, but honestly I'm willing to try it.
Snakes >>> rats and mice, imho.

Would you be this freaked out if they were white rats?
Think about it.

I would presume you could release some kind of extermination fog to kill then, but you would then have to go remove them.

I feel like there are professionals to deal with this sort of thing

You have an infestation of roof rats. The only way to be free of them is to hire a professional exterminator. The rats travel from house to house looking for ways inside.
You can get a dog or cat but don't expect much from them. The rats are very smart. They learn the habits of you and your pets and are experts at avoiding you.
Good luck. Rats are one of the most frustrating problems of home ownership.

Call a pest control specialist. It will cost money, but he's the one who will catch the bubonic plague, not you.

So first off, rats are my kryptonite. I would recommend you move out immediately and burn the house down. Its the only way to be sure.
If it makes you feel any better, sounds from your attic can be worse.

Glue traps did the trick for me.

That's EXACTLY how those varmints looked.
I don't agree with the cat theory. My niece had a tabby cat who was SCARED of a PET FANCY RAT! Cats nowadays have devolved from predators that rodents were in terror of, to being more delicate than precious millenial snowflakes.

I had the same problem. Called a professional and he gave them some sort of blood thinner to drive them out. Haven't heard them again since.
