Now that we’ve determined that Florida State is Quarterback U, at least since 2010, based on college and NFL success, it’s time to turn our attention to Running Back U.

In my column this past spring I awarded Georgia that designation, but it was more of an educated guess rather than a well-researched opinion. It turns out, despite the success of Todd Gurley and now Nick Chubb, that the Dawgs weren’t even close, which I found shocking.

The Criteria: Starting in 2010, we looked at how many first- and second-round NFL Draft picks a college produced, how many running backs from a school rushed for more than 1,700 yards in a college season, how many running backs from a school had more than 1,200 yards rushing in an NFL season and threw in intangibles like Heisman Voting, NFL MVP winners, All-Pro selections, Pro Bowls and pure subjective opinion.

1. ALABAMA

The Crimson Tide are the clear top choice at running back, with Derrick Henry, Eddie Lacy, Trent Richardson and T.J. Yeldon all making their mark at the college and/or NFL level since 2010. And this doesn’t even include Mark Ingram winning the Heisman in 2009 but it, of course, does include his first-round draft status in 2011.

Focusing on Henry, Lacy, Richardson and Yeldon, though, Henry won the 2015 Heisman Trophy after leading the nation in rushing yards, which helped him get drafted in the second round this spring. Richardson finished third in the 2011 Heisman voting and was picked third overall in the 2012 Draft, but he has flamed out quickly in the NFL. Lacy has had the most NFL success of the group so far. After being drafted in the second round in 2013 he was named the Offensive Rookie of the Year with Green Bay. Finally, Yeldon, who was selected in the second round in 2015 by Jacksonville, showed flashes of potential for the Jaguars during his rookie season.

Damien Harris looks to be the next in line to keep this train rolling. The college success of Henry, Richardson, Lacy and Yeldon outweighs some other programs who have had better balance between college and the NFL, but not the depth of four big-time backs in such a span.

But Lacy is the only good one. Ingram is decent. Yeldon is struggling this year. Richardson is a massive bust. Henry can be pretty good but it's too early since he's behind Murray.

Arkansas has the most 1,000+ yard rushing seasons by a running back over the last decade (10).

Arkansas has the highest YPC for the top 10 rushing seasons for a team over the last decade (5.998 YPC).

Arkansas has had 2 RB's in the last decade earn 1,000+ yards in their frosh, soph, and jr seasons (McFadden and Collins). Only 1 other SEC player has ever done that (Hershel).

3 times in the last decade Arkansas has had 2 RB's on the same team earn over 1,000 yards (not sure if this leads the SEC but I'm guessing it does).

So arbitrary. Why not start June 13, 1964?

Hmmm....well if Bama's RBs are so elite maybe you care to explain these stats:

ALL-TIME SEC RUSHING LEADERS

Rk_Player____Yds__Team
1__Walker____5259 Georgia
2__McFadden_4590 Arkansas
3__Faulk_____4557 LSU
4__Jackson___4303 Auburn
5__Rhett_____4163 Florida
6__Hilliard____4050 LSU
7__Alexander_4035 LSU
8__Dixon____3994 Miss St
9__Smith____3928 Florida
10_Collins____3835 Kentucky

Not one Alabama RB in the SEC Top 10. Not even one. Also, note that Fournette needs only 622 yards to put him at 3,995 good for 8th place. Say, you know that would give LSU 4 of the top 8 all-time SEC rushers.

As long as we aren't talking about fantasy team points once they go to the NFL...then sure.

Wow a whole 5 year sample size!!!

quote:

how many first- and second-round NFL Draft picks a college produced,

completely irrelevant when it comes to how good they were in college.

quote:

how many running backs from a school rushed for more than 1,700 yards in a college season

why 1700?

quote:

how many running backs from a school had more than 1,200 yards rushing in an NFL season

100% irrelevant when talking abotu how good a college is with these players

quote:

Heisman Voting, NFL MVP winners, All-Pro selections, Pro Bowls and pure subjective opinion.

Valid, irrelevant, irrelevant, irrelevant, subjective.

So basically this is about "NFL RBs from which school have done the best as pros". Doesn't mean shite as it relates to college. And yes, I would say all this even if UGA was #1 on this list.

I don't disagree with the list too much but not sure how it treats LSU.

quote:

LSU is now all about Leonard Fournette, and rightfully so, but with Jeremy Hill and Stevan Ridley also making their mark in the NFL, the Tigers have proven themselves as a consistent producer of top-level running back talent.

They left Spencer Ware off who leads the league in yards from scrimmage... Alfred Blue?

Hilliard, Magee, and Ridley were all on rosters last season.. not sure where they are now.

Alabama isn't doing anything significant to develop RBs, they are just recruiting them really well. LSU was DBU, because they were taking HS QBs and 3 stars and turning them into NFL players.
