Literally every school in the SEC has permitted transfers within the SEC, including Alabama.
Transfers are permitted but waiving the year is at the schools discretion.

This whole thing was stupid
Yes it was but not because of Saban

Saban showed his arse, again.
Invoking the rule that all 14 member schools agreed upon is showing his arse?

Ok that makes more sense. It's just speculation on my part

Idc that Smith went to UGA I just don't like all the pissing and moaning to get his way.
in all fairness Saban tried to piss and moan to get his way as well.
Both party's played this badly, but I do agree smith did more

f it becomes 'common law' for these transfers to happens with no competition clause imposable by the original school, we may see a lot of shuffling in the years to come. We'll see.
Here is what it requires.
1). The player will have to graduate.
2). The player will have to have remaining eligibility.
3). The player will have to be good enough for the other program to want him for 1 year, over a new recruit for 4-5, or a JUCO transfer for 2-4.
How many kids actually meet this criteria each year? The teams that will suffer most are the ones with the most 3-4 star backups that don't get any significant playing time during their undergraduate time at the university. Do you seriously have a problem with a true Student Athlete going somewhere he will actually have a chance to start for a year? Why restrict that...he wasn't going to start for you, anyway. Why do you give a rats arse?

Graduates with eligibility can now be recruited off of rosters by others schools, unlike others players who have to sit a year, you dumbasses.
Not sure why it's difficult for some to comprehend that's a bad thing. You ok with Saban recruiting your 5th year Seniors? Maybe Bama was his first choice out of high school and and Bama didn't have the room then but they do now.
This sets a bad precedence.
Trust me, Saban will use this new precedence to his advantage and will be successful with it. Then you'll be crying.

Why he would want to leave Nick's Defense.
Oh, that question.
He obviously was close to Kirby and chose a path where he felt comfortable going to and likely would see more playing time. Don't like it, but understand the why of it. I'm glad it was someone like Smith doing it and not a critical piece of our defense, like one of our linemen.
LSU guy prefers that it's rats jumping off the sinking ship.

just to nitpick, but similar, it's not just waiving the year, they also sign off on the particular school

Saban played a part in this as well. He tried to use the waiver as a pressure point to keep Smith at bama. Smith was already gone. Had Saban signed the waiver(which coaches do for schools they arent playing against quite often) there would have never been anything said in the media.

Hate to see how Saban takes this out on the rest of the SEC this year, there may not even be a mercy knee this year

You really think having one year in a system where he is already behind is better for him than starting in a system he already knows and plays every game for most of the snaps.
I think people are saying that should be his choice. His obligation to Bama was met. They offer him a scholarship until he graduates...he works to the best of his ability on the field and stays eligible (and out of trouble) off the field. That agreement has been fulfilled by both sides. Neither should be obligated to the other.

Add in player has to request to talk to other programs first as well.

whole thing is shady as frick. if smith was attached to kirby why not leave in january? why blow an entire summers worth of workouts just to leave? why did he screw his team over in August? It's not like he was not getting playing time - would have seen plenty of snaps. woudlnt doubt if there was some back room shite going on with Kirby talking to him.

Smith slotted as the extra back in our dime packages. He has and would continue to see plenty of playing time. He had a very important role in Bama's defensive schemes. He didn't like that role

He didn't graduate until last week. Thus, he wasn't eligible to transfer under the grad rule until last week.

Exactly. Should he be forced to play a role that he doesn't want after he has met his obligation to the University?

quote:Dude he was just a nickelback, its not like Cam Robinson or Tim Williams left or anything. Hell we could put a few other kids in that spot and not see a significant drop off. My problem with this whole fiasco was never with the kid transferring I believe a lot of Bama fans on here felt the same way, my personal problem with this was how him and his mom went about getting the transfer from the start and thats been my only issue with this.
Saban molded this guy for 3 years and now he was to be part of the cog of the Saban machine.

I haven't really followed this thing closely, but when did he first ask saban to leave?
